This is more-or-less what I would like to know too. Which TV is the best from the new Plasma 3D offerings. Panasonic TX P50VT30, Samsung PS51D8000 or the LG 50PZ950T (which I wasn't really aware of until this thread). Is WHF going to be doing a comparison of the big 50' 3D Plasmas?

I did see the Samsung PS51D8000 next to a Panasonic TX P50VT20 over the weeknd and the Samsung looked great. I have been veering towards the Panasonic P50VT30 until now from all the great reviews the P50VT20 has had, but the Samsung really had my and my wife's vote. I guess the Samsung is a 2011 model as opposed to the Panasonic VT20 being a 2010 hence the better image (?).

Either way, add the LG into the mix and a comparison would be good to see.

Hi just a little about my expereince with panasonic

Had a TX-P50VT30B On order since 12/04/2011 and today 31st May 2011 still no TV, Panasonic have given 3 delivery dates and each time the TV does not turn up !!. Customer service emails take over 1 week to reply and i dont want to call the premium rate number for hours i think £2200 pounds is enough to spend. Looking back i would not have purchased this TV as other manufacturers are perhaps better at customer expectations.

Yep - 50in TV Supertest in our August issue, which goes out to subscribers on 24th June and is in shops/available to download by 30th June.

Where did you buy it from?

Can you confirm whether this 50in TV Supertest will include the Panasonic VT30 and Samsung D8000 (plasma)? Please.

If you look properly at the list it is clearly a mixture of higher and lower end models with the Samsung D495 being right a the bottom end as it's not even a 1080p model.

according to one review i've read the lg mentioned in the thread heading has gone backwards in terms of black levels, with last years pk950 said to have much better blacks, if they are important.

Why the mix? Surely one test for the top end and one for the budget end would be better?

When there are distinct price/class groupings within a Supertest, we can/do name multiple test winners if justified.

The bargain LG and Samsung plasmas are almost identically specified - should be a good shootout there to determine if either are a storming budget buy.

Re the lack of flagship LG - we weren't suppled with one. I've already had to buy one TV for this test and wasn't going to buy two!

And the flagship Sony sets aren't yet in the shops/avaialble for review - we can only test what actually exists!

Hopefully we should get first HX923 Sony in for first tests in the same issue, so we will be able to do some comparisons with the premium end of the 50in sets we'll have in for the Supertest.

And remember - this is just our first @50in Supertest. There will be more as the year - and model rollouts - progress.

I will be very interested in reading the 50VT30 review as I have the 42 inch version and the SD images are very poor in my oppinion.

I assume you've set the box to Auto so that the Panasonic is doing the upscaling, not the Sky box?

And which channels are particularly poor? Some of the SD digital channels on Sky look appalling on ANYTHING....

Yes the box is on auto, are there any other options that could help on either the box or tv?

There are a few really poor ones but I think the worst offender is Eurosport!

Re the set itself, i'd experiment with picture processing modes. Start with everything switched off and try introducing elements one at a time until you find the best settings (which may, of course, be different for SD TV than they would for, say, watching a Blu-ray).

And get yourself an HD subscription to Eurosport, if you watch it a lot. Seriously!

People have got to remember that today's TVs - especially the flagship sets - are optimised for HD performance; for the consumers who want the ultimate movie/TV/gaming experience. Low bit-rate digital TV channels aren't part of that plan...

It's another reason we've included the two HD Ready (rather than 1080p) sets in the 50in Supertest- it's going to be very interesting to see how the bargain LG and Samsung sets fare with SD compared to their higher-end, 1080p rivals. It could be that if you're someone that plans to watch mostly SD content, you could be better off (in all senses) with a lower-spec set. But we shall see....

Hi Muzza

The IFC system, which can be used on its Medium setting, can be of help, but like Clare said you are going to need to experiment a bit.
