Samsung LE-A656 Firmware update (OWNERS READ!!!)

Hello hifi folks, There seems to a big problem with the Samsung LE-A656. The problem is, every few seconds images in the background seem to go out of focus (from blurry to very sharp and vice versa). In other forums, many owners have mailed or phoned to discuss this fault. With result!! There is a firmware update now available which is already installed and confirmed by owners who confirm that the out of focus problems ARE SOLVED. This firmware is not official yet; but chances are it will be official in a few days. I am looking for a decent first LCD or plasma for months now (yes, I am that kind of guy LOL) and so far I was aiming for the Panny because of the dreaded problems with the LE-A656 but now that the out of focus problem is solved I intend to go for the LE-A656 now. My question for the What Hifi forum and everyone who is reading this: Did these out of problems for owners of the LE-A656 familiar or did you not have any problems at all?

We've had two LEA656 models in and experienced no such problems...

It is possible that newer sets from the factory will have a newer version of firmware. So it's possible that this only affects the 1st bacth of tv's.

Regarding the lcd vs plasma, make sure to demo both tv's. I have the 42"PZ85 and it's a very very good tv.

To the posters above: can you confirm the latest firmware version number please? This will be the version AFTER the upgrade. I have heard this new firmware will be fm transmitted soon, so all owners will be up to spec.
Lastly, can you tell me how to check my firmware number (the remote control keys to access the service menu). I want to check mine, and will then consider whether to wait for it passively, or actively download it. Cheers (I have the 46" as per my sig, so its that firmware latest number I am after).

Hello SAP, I'm surprised that the What Hifi did not seem to notice the out of focus problems but then again maybe they got some LCD's who did not have the problems; but it is a major problem considering the fact Samsung does acknowledge it. I have some links Sap but that is from another forum I don't know if What Hifi approves it when I put a link on here and also beware, the update DOES work but it is not official YET. So beware when doing this upgrade, you went me to send a PM to you?

Yes, we will delete any links to other forums - it's in the House Rules.

And I'd advise against using any unofficial firmware update, as doing so may invalidate your warranty.

I'd wait for the firmware update to happen automatically, though I have to say I'm at a loss as to how any problem could cause backgrounds to appear to go in and out of focus while not affecting the rest of the picture.

I don't see the problem on mine, so I'll wait.for the Samsung official update through the tv signal. Didn't want links to other forums, just a quick and dirty update of the current firmware version for my set, and a simple description of how to access the menu to check mine. I'd still be interested if you could get the number, and the keys to use to check. I'm just curious and want to see where I stand.
Would a firmware update come via cable tv? I know they are transmitted for receiving by ariel but will I get them considering I have no ariel and use a V+ as my ONLY signal?

Andrew, there are dozens of owners of this LCD who are just as confused as you are, and can explain in detail how this problem looks like; but I cannot post any links so I'm afraid you just have to do it with me LOL

SAP7: maybe a stupid question but doesn't your manual of your TV explains how to acces the servicemenu and check for the firmware version??? I will try and find to link where it is explained and try to - not by a link cause that is forbidden - post it here by myself if you want to.

Any news on firmware numbers? And, as I asked, can youi get the update on cable (or do I need to sort my aerial out??)?
