I have a Samsung LE40A686 TV and Sony DG820 AV Amp.

Attached to the AV is a blu-ray player, 5.1 surround sound speaker package and my TV.

The blu-ray player works fine and the sound outputs from the speakers perfectly.

When i'm playing normal tv/built-in freeview the sound does not come through the speakers at all.

The TV menu 'when scanning' reads that there is a blu-ray player and AV connected but only the blu-ray then comes up in the menu. AV Receiver option is grey and excluded from the choice.

I have a HDMI cable from the TV to the AVR and a HDMI cable from the Blu-ray to the AVR so if one works then why not the other??

Am I missing something?

Probably because the HDMI monitor socket on the Sony is only an output, and the HDMI input on the TV only an input, so no signal flows back from TV to receiver.

You'll need to make an extra audio connection from TV to receiver. Samsungs tend to have an optical digital output for just this purpose.
