Anyone able to help with getting S/PDIF working.

I have connected an Optical and Coax cable to the S/PDIF output on my PC to DAC but neither of them work. USB is OK. Windows shows the digital output and says that it is working OK.

Spent hours sweeping the internet and there appears to be a lot of problems getting it to work.

Downloaded latest drivers etc etc. Any help appreciated

edit....OS is Vista

I suspect you need to tweak a setting on your soundcard software. Which soundcard are you using?

Is the S/PDIF output via a mini-jack socket? Can you see a light inside the socket?

Yes there is a red light in the socket and the S/Pdif is an onboard one. Gigabyte mainboard with a Realtek audio chipset. Downloaded latest drivers and spent ages going through the settings but still not working. Output is standard toslink.

Dac is 100% as is the cable....it works when connected to airport express.

I suspect its gonna be difficult to offer much advice. What's the model number/name of the motherboard?

Heres a link to the board

Are you sure that the S/PDIF on the motherboard is actually connected to a socket on the back panel?

The specs state that there is an internal I/O S/PDIF out header, but doesn't mention S/PDIF as a connector on the back panel.

If you take a look at the manual for this board it states...

SPDIF_O (S/PDIF Out Header)
This header supports digital S/PDIF out. Via an optional S/PDIF out cable, this header can connect
to an audio device that supports digital audio in. For purchasing the optional S/PDIF out cable,
please contact the local dealer.

PDF Manual.

Looking further on, it is clear that to utilise S/PDIF or Coaxial, you need this additional cable/back panel. The S/PDIF is not provided through a mini-jack.

The manual also provides information on how to configure the S/PDIF via the motherboard tools GUI (Page 75).

Is this news to you or did you know all of this already?

Referring to the last line in your post....its not news and yes I have already been through this. thanks for your help so far though....anymore help is appreciated

OK....an update....I found somewhere that there have been major problems with S/PDIF and Vista working together....to do with copying protected music. I decided to revert to XP, something I have wanted to do for a while so no big deal there. Installed XP and went through all the setup and instalation processes, new drivers etc and it still doesnt work. Same as before, light on but the DAC wont lock on to it. I am not giving up just yet, there has to be a solution somewhere.
