Room 101

I have another entry for room101. Car manufacturers and the money they charge for map updates of the inbuilt sat nav. My 2021 Mazda CX-30 has one more free update that I have to do before the end of this month, then its £120 a year. My car also works with android auto and Google maps has proved more accurate than the built in sat nav on recent journeys and of course you get traffic alerts.
Also for my old car I bought a basic Garmin sat nav 10+ years ago and that cost me an additional £65 for lifetime updates of the maps, I updated that last year. So where do car manufacturers get off charging per year?

The gobshite that cracked the windscreen of my MX5 three weeks ago!

What a ball ache from the start.

Firstly because of all the ADAS nonsense needing recalibrated it can't be replaced mobile and has had to go into Autoglass' workshop.

Then first available appointment was two weeks ago today. Booked it in only to get a phone call to say they had no availability and would have to reschedule.

First available date when I was also free was today so booked in for 10am. Supposed to take 2 hours.

Got their for 9.45 and they took it straight into the workshop to do an ECU scan to check there were no faults with the ADAS that would prevent recalibration.

Took 3 techs 30 mins to find the ODBII port.
Wasn't where it's supposed to be located, ended up being tucked right up under the dash behind a trim panel.

Then their scan tool had trouble communicating with my ECU, so that took another 30mins to complete.

Finally started work on actually replacing the windscreen at 11.00.

Currently camped out in a greasy spoon, because of course, they're located on an industrial estate in the arse end of nowhere.

Great start to my 6 days leave...

So the manufacturer of the car, the same company who designed the car put the ODBII port in the wrong place. Yeah sure they did. Roughly translated, we haven't got a clue what we are doing or where to look, so we'll blame Mazda.

It genuinely wasn't.

I looked in the online manual for its location. It isn't located where Mazda state it is.

Not the first car I've had that didn't conform to specs either....

I can go on the Ford website and purchase the SD card to update my satnav, I believe I paid £25 last time, 2023?
Still, it should be free. Afterall you paid a lot for your car and you're tied in the manufacturers ecosystem. It should be symbiosis, mutually beneficial but it seems they just want to rip us off.

It's quite funny you're looking at your car's satnav screen and it looks like you're in a middle of a field but you know you're on the new by-pass. I think the government should put through, a new legislation, that it is the manufacturers legal responsibility to ensure their satnav systems are regularly updated for safety reasons.
It can be done, my friend drives a Chinese EV MG vehicle (hybrid actually), the satnav system is Google Maps, gets updated on a regular bases.

That's why I've been using android auto it's Google maps so regular automatic updates. The only thing I miss when using android auto over the built in sat nav, is that my Mazda has a HUD and directions from the inbuilt sat nav are projected on the windscreen.
If Mazda charged £25 I wouldn't mind so much.

The number 23 is all that matters really. Seems bizarre at first glance, but if there were more than 23 people in the restaurant...!
The problem is actually a different one. The problem is actually, what this the probability that there will be another birthday party in in the restaurant at the same time as yours?

I was once in an Italian restaurant where the staff would come out at the same time as the cake and bang pots. After the 3rd go we were pretty fed up, because we were planning to have the cake back home. No pot-banging on our behalf!

All done by 12.30 in the end.

Another annoyance ,not just with Autoglass but all companies that try to upsell.

During the booking process they tried to sell me new wiper blades to be fitted during the appointment. That'll be £50 thankyouverymuch.

RainX treatment was you guessed it another £50. About £8 a bottle at euro car parts.

Fifty bloody quid. You can do one Autoglass!

Then again this morning, obviously under orders from the corporate bean counters ,the tech tried again to upsell new wipers.

That was until I pointed out I had a brand new set ready to go in the boot that cost all of £18 for the pair from euro car parts and took literally seconds of my time to fit.
