Ripping straight to the NAS, possible?

Good morning,

Since yesterday I do not have any working cd player in the house as my MacBook Pro does not have any cd player and the cdrom of the other notebook just broke down.

I am then looking for an item like an external cd player which will rip automatically to flac and store the ripped file to the Netgear NAS Ultra. Is this piece of kit existing or I am just dreaming?

So ideally I put the cd into the player, it converts the CD into FLAC and saves the ripped album on the NAS into the correct folder...

Just a little clarification, I do not want a CD ripping with NAS included (like VortexBox) but the only the CD ripping part with automatic tags research on the web which would be storing the file into another NAS connected to the network.

It might be an idea...but I like to have something completely dedicated to the music...pity the RipNAS is so expensive otherwise I could try to sell back my Netgear Ultra and get a RipNAS mini.

I am afraid you will need a computer or dedicated ripper to do the data conversion. The external drive for the macbook sounds like the cheapest, most flexible, and therefore best (if most untidy) option. You can select which software suits your needs best for the conversion.

I actually spent a few months looking for a similar product for my needs, but couldn't find any. You can always buy a Vortexbox & use its hard drive as a backup to your existing NAS.

Can't the NAS just be set as the destination for the rips? I assume not, but thought it may be worth mentioning.

You might also want to take a look at the Cocktail Audio X10 - this would perform your CD ripping needs to FLAC to an internal HDD. The unit can also access other devices (wired or wirelessly) on the network (the blurb talks about streaming music stored on NASand samba server/client functionality) - perhaps it can also write to NAS when ripping...?

yes, should be able to do that on mac/linux/windows based solutions easy.

At the moment the OP doesn't have a CD drive capable of ripping anything, which is the nature of his original enquiry. I'd be tempted to suggest, if he doesn't want a USB drive hanging off his MacBook, that the most cost-effective solution is probably a budget laptop with a built-in CD/DVD drive – which will cost, say, £250 (or possibly even less if you go for a recon/ex-dem type machine) and map that to the NAS as a ripper.

Thanks Andrew, this was indeed my original question. Wanted to avoid adding a CD drive to my MacBook...but a dedicated item which I could put there and use only for that. Maybe you are right about the budget laptop as being the most cost/effective solution for what I want to achieve...

As far as we know he didn't but there is no ripping device that doesn't include its own storage (which is understandable really).

Didn't suit the OP, but you could buy an external CD drive & connect it to your laptop for rips.
