Revel Performa 3 M105 vs ATC SCM 11 (curved)

So... Anyone that got a chance to compare these? Reviews on the Revels say they dissappear, and have a huge soundstage, and that's the kind of sound I like. But the ATCs are hard to ignore, since their reviews are also stellar, and also I can bi-amp them with my UQ2 + Nap100. I can't audition any of them, the ATC importer only sells online, and the Revel dealer doesn't have them available for auditioning. I've had problems with boomy bass before, not so with the Focals, which sound great. But you know, I got the itch again, and the Wharfedale Jade 3 (bi-amped) showed me that my Naim duo is capable of so much more. Also, I made the mistake of auditioning Revel Performa 3 F208 floorstanders...

So. Anyone that got a chance to compare these? Do ATC also vanish and do euphony, or they do a more hi-fi-ish thing, like a pair of PMC floorstanders I listened for 5 minutes with Bryston separates?

Thanks in advance.

Your going to have to try them at home. Speakers react to room immensely. Youll see that there is the absorb vs the release energy philosophy. You need to make sure you try classic spendor, harbeth or totem vibrant philosophy in the mix too. Totem have a snap that standds out of a crowd of speakers. Its not better and can color the sound but you have at leat to try it. It can do wonder! But frankly I dont see any bad speakers in your list.

All the way for me. Ive tested jade 5 and they are not a patch imo on atc scm40s.

If you like the sound of accuracy then id go atc.

Why dont you go on atc forums? You will get lots of good read over that way.

Id also read this.

Im getting some ATC SCM11s on home demo

They are superbly mad, the drivers weigh an absolute tonne - just scream quality

They get a lot of plaudits - so a home demo needed to see if they improve on the Kudos X2

They like a lot of power too so no worries for you on that front ( i presume the NAP100 is 100watts )

Hi all and thanks. As I said, I'm almost sure I can't audition, but I'll have a chat with both dealers. I know how important it is to hear the stuff, especially in my own room.

To be honest, I don't mind coloration, I'm not in the "warts and all" camp. I like an enveloping sound, but that can also punch when needed, and not bright.

As for the Nap100, no, unfortunately it's only 50w, but I can send them to the mid drivers, and send the 30w from the UQ2 to the tweeters.

Hi Rainsoothe,

I've had a pair of SCM11s for over a year now and love their 'sound' although this is usually more dependent on your source equipment and quality of recording; they are relatively uncoloured as speakers go. They are not, on the other hand, particularly brutal in their presentation and it's possible to listen for long periods without fatigue. As for 'transparent' and 'holographic', I wouldn't necessarily use these terms either. However, I believe that the tone/timbre (whatever words you try to use to represent the sound of music) is as close to how it left the recording studio as is possible for just over £1k. In this sense, they must represent excellent value for money. They are also brilliant if, like me, you have a room with tricky acoustics (ours is relatively small and prone to bass boom issues) and use a sealed cabinet without port.

Like others who have commented, always try to audition at home but if this isn't possible, then your risk with these speakers is probably no more but probably less than many others you could go for without auditioning first. Good luck!

ps not sure that bi-amping as you suggest will produce any better results.

atc are imho one of the best speakers on the planet. period. easy to place in the room too. amazing speakers.

however your nap100 is not enough to power any of the scm's.. you need more watts or your asking for distorted sound.

My vote is for the Revels. I doubt you'll find too many people who have compared both brands, as Revel is American while ATC is UK. I've heard and loved Revel speakers, but never ATC.

But in theory either brand should be excellent. So you just have to take a risk on one.
