Hey,

Just a quick question, probably quite easy but i just want to run it passed some educated people! I want to play SACD/CD'S through my av reciever/blu-ray player. For info i'm using STR-DA3500ES av receiver and an BDP-S570 blu-ray player.

They are currently connected via HDMI out on the player to HDMI in on the receiver. (then receiver to tv, but thats not important)

Whats the best way about connecting the 2 units, and on what settings? digital coaxail out on the player to SA-CD/CD in on the receiver? or optical out on the player, in to what on the receiver?

Any thoughts/ suggestions would be a great help.

Many thanks,

Matt

If you want to play your CD's etc in 2 channel then it may be worth connecting the Coaxial and setting this input to Pure Direct or similar if the amp has it.

I do not believe the quality of the signal is different between Coax and HDMI as they are both digital, but it means you can have the Amp set up specifically for music on one of the presents as opposed to Pro-logic Movie or whatever you normally have for playing DVD's, if you happen to listen to Movies and music with the same settings I can not see a benefit of using a separate connection.

Pwiles,

Think i'll go for the coaxial option, as i would prefer to play it in 2 channel. and have the receiver set up specifically for music. Makes programming my logitech remote easier aswell!

I did initially just try playing it through the hdmi cable. the player appears to play the cd, but no sound, so i cycled through the inputs on the receiver but to no avail. So digital coaxial it is. Any suggestions as to a cable to go for?

do you have it set to "pure direct" mode - cos on denon receivers this bypasses the digital outputs and only analog outputs work in that mode - hence why you dont get the sound from HDMI

if this is the case then neither the coax or optical will work either - while its set to pure direct mode - only thing to do then is to have CD playback from RCA interconnects

read your manual about the pure direct modes - im not 100% certain on how the Sony works but as ive said the only thing i have set to pure direct is the CD player inputs and then those are connected via RCA analog cables - works perfect for me - ive tried playing CD off my bluray player using the HDMI connection and i lose sound if its in "pure direct" mode - but Denon offers another plain old vanilla "direct" mode which only bypasses the software like the EQ and time adjustments and tone controls etc and the HDMI connections work then

The hdmi connection will enable you to enjoy the full surround sound from sacds as well as good ol' stereo. (Other connections will not take advantage of the surround sound offered by sacd).

You do need to get your 570 bluray player to convert (the DSD) to (L)PCM though as your amp doesn't understand the DSD signal on sacds.

This should work as I use my 570 with an Onkyo amp and a single hdmi lead.
