Hi Folks, Having bought a Marantz CD6002 last week , and spending 3 days of the Easter holiday chopping and changing Amps around at home, I still find I’m missing the sound of my old Marantz CD63SE. I’m an ex TV and Video Technician (10yrs ago) and I thought I might have a go at replacing the laser assembly of my old CD player, I loved the sound of this and if I can get it working properly again I’ll be dead chuffed, it has unstable playback speed (sounds like a warped record) and skips a lot. I wonder if any of you Guru’s can tell me where I can get a replacement Laser assembly for my Marantz CD63SE? I live in Scotland (Glasgow is my nearest city). Is there a place where I can get the Laser Assembly from in person, or is there somewhere I can order one from? Also any ideas on how much the part is likely to cost? Thanks Guy’s

D'ya know what...I don't reckon that's the laser assembly. I reckon more likely the clock. If the laser assembly was to blame, the sound would skip and have breaks in it rather than change speed...

Of course, I'm not a electronics guru so if someone wants to shoot me down in flames, please feel free. And I second John's comment about struggling to find parts. I reckon fleabay might be your best bet too...

Now I'm a little out of my depth here, but there's normally a crystal oscillator ("clock") - they normally have a frequency in MHz stamped on them, and are silver in colour, about 10-12mm long.

But how you go about testing it is an entirely different matter...oscilloscope maybe?

Ah! I know what you mean now, A crystal oscillator, I know what it looks like, I'll check it over see if it's the culprit. Does anyone know if I can get a replacement in Maplins?

You wont get one at Maplins. But if you google Net Audio, they may be able to help you out.

Hi Folks,

Just thought I might just point out that I have been successful at sourcing a new laser assembly for my old CD63se. I'm going to have a go at replacing it and also attempting a few modifications that I found kicking about on the internet.

New Laser assembly plus postage and packing cost me 25Quid from www.dalbani.co.uk.

Well Yesterday I ordered a new laser assembly for my CD63se, it arrived at my work at 8:30 this morning, (this despite being told by practically every repair place that I tried that I would never get a laser assembly for a 14yr old CD player.)

Last night I stripped the mechanism and removed the old one, I've taken digital camera pics showing disassembly at every stage as I did it. It really is not as difficult as you might think.

I think any of you guy's on here could do it, and laser assemblies are still available for CD players a lot older than mine.

I'd like to think some of you guy's might be interested to know how I get on with this project, I've never changed a laser before but I just wanted to be brave and attempt it.

Looking forward to hear how you get on with it. How much was the assembly?

OK that's it I've finished it. 100 percent success!

The replacement unit is a complete unit, it comes with laser, Spindle motor (the one that spins the disc) and a new motor and worm gear that moves the laser up and down a rail to positions on the disc. The only motor you don't change is the one the moves the disc tray in and out

So there it is, my CD63se lives again!

The whole job took me about an hour and a half from start to finish, the hardest part was traipsing around half of the west of Scotland trying to find someone who stocked White Lithium grease to re-grease the sled, gears e.t.c

B&Q? No! (big space where it should be.) Maplins? No! (blank stare and head scratching) various computer specialists? No! (blank stare again) then just on the off chance whilst passing.. Halfords? .BINGO!! Must be the only place within 25 miles of where I live that stocks this grease.
Anyway, Job done, now I'm off to something more important ..."Listening to the music"
Thanks for reading this thread.
Tes.
