As Frank Spencer would say (apologies to any non Brits or people under 40!) I've had a bit of trouble.
My trusted SP9 has thrown a bit of a wobbly.
Last year I had to get the pot reconditioned. No great shakes. It is over 20 years old.
However, a month or so ago it started to push out loud distorted treble out of the right channel. It was intermittent, so as you do, I ignored it. Changing the input source made no difference as it bled through all settings.
I gave the pot a gentle wiggle and BANG!!!!!!!
A massive spike shuddered through to my right speaker, blowing the main drive unit. Nice.
After drawing a blank with my local dealer, I ended up taking both back speakers to PMC for two replacement drivers. It's funny how you always need to replace things in pairs! That's the first £290 gone. :wall:
I'm struggling to get the amp repaired at the moment. Again my local dealers sub contracted electrical engineer has drawn a blank. It would seem the defected components can't be identified and Absolute Sounds have been suggested as the next port of call. Makes sense, but they are expensive. £90 plus VAT for a quote regardless of any work being done and a minimum of two hours labour at £220 before and parts are sourced.
This is turning out to be a very expensive pot wriggle!
Sorry for the life story, but I find it carthartic.
So what should I do?
1. Get it repaired (bit of a no brainier really as I have nothing else)
2. Get it repaired and if money allows, get it upgraded to mk 3 and carry on
3. Get it repaired and sell on and look for something else
If I go with option 3, it brings me back to the point of my post (at last you cry  ) what second hand options could I consider around the £1000 mark? A phono input is a must as is a match with the Bryston.
All comments/suggestions gratefully received!
