Hi

I am the owner of a Rega Mira 3 and a Rega Planar 3. Now I am considering to buy Rega's Fono MM RIAA. But will I experience any improvement or is the RIAA in Mira 3 essentially the same as the Fono?

Thank you for any help,

Bo.

The Rega Fono is essentially the same design as the phono-stage built into the Mira 3 (Rega even state this) probably with some refinements due mostly to having a seperate power-supply and box.

The £170 (or whatever the Fono costs) would yield a bigger improvement if spent moving from a budget MM cartridge to something like a Goldring 1022 or 1042 or similar instead.

The Goldring 1012/1022/1042 series have great synergy with the RB300 arm.

The Ortofon 2M Bronze can be acquired for about the same sort of money as well.

If you are going to upgrade from the Mira 3 phono stage then go for something like the Heed Questar MM (£250) or Trichord Dino (£320) where the upgrade will be be less 'subtle'.

This is completely off topic, MuteViking, but I was wondering whether you could tell me a bit more about your Rega Mira 3? What's it like? Opinions on this forum seem to be divided. I have a Rega Planet, which I love, and wonder how it would complement it.

Thanks,

Hedgehog

I listened to the Brio 3 with P3-24 Bias cartridge and Epos m5 speakers the other day, to be honest i was blown away i just did not expect this system to sound so good. As far as i know the Fono is more or less the same stage as the Mira anyway so maybe not a great difference but maybe a change of cartridge may improve things i just don't know but i am going to evaluate my system. I may well go for the Brio intergrated amp and maybe the elys 2 cartridge to keep the Rega synergy and maybe the new RS1 speakers but the phono stage in the Rega amps are certainly not an after thought.

Hello hedgehog,

Sorry, missed your question. It has no big soundstage and can seem a little "dry" in its sound, but still very musical. It is not a keeper for me, although i have both the apollo and a planar 3. You should certainly audition it at home first.

Bo.
