Hi everyone,

Just wanted to say that I was considering myself very satisfied with my system. But looking at the internet for curiosity there was an old rega elicit that was way to cheap to be left there. I bought it just to give it a spin knowing i could resell it easily at a better price too. So I took this little rega elicit v1 home, got my older speaker out of the closet, plugged it and started my favorites playlist. Something happened! I loved it! Despite taking a lot of demos for the last 3 years of very expansive high rated stuff, this ridiculously old and cheap amp made the best impression on me. I dont say this for any selling purpose. Im having a great time with that amp and paid 20 times less for it then my main amp. makes me wonder about everything and thruth. Thats all, nothing more to say.

Good for you, glad you are pleased 🙂

Without wanting to spark a pointless 'new vs old' debate, it is obvious if you properly sit and think about it that the quality of 'matured' technologies like amps and speakers cannot improve exponentially in leaps and bounds with every new model, even though it's in the interest of the manufacturers and the press to tell you otherwise.

True.

Elicit pleasures are the best.

Is yours the so-called 'clamshell' design? (I had a Rega system based on the original Brio and matching 'Rega Radio' tuner for many years.)

I'm not aware how the new elicit-r sounds but I paid 300 canadian and the new cost 3000. If I don't like a new one I'll loose 30% right away while I can resell this one with profit if I'm not in a hurry. It probably has a super phono input too. It's just a great amp. Once it's transparent and powerful enough what more can you ask?

I had a lovely sounding old pair of wharfedale dentons.

Ah you see the problem is you're coming across as satisfied, and from a manufacturer's perspective that really is a Bad Thing. In order to continue as a trading entity, it's in their interest to convince you that you're not satisfied, because the new Mk2 GTi EFi 16V bi-turbo is so much better, it resolves problems with your current kit that you didn't know it had, and you'll enjoy the new one so much more. Honest.

I've heard a pair years ago, but I never owned any. I think the Rogers Ravensbrook amp I heard them paired with maybe didn't do them justice, but they still sounded nice. Would be great to hear a pair now, and other classic speakers from a similar era. For instance I'd love to hear some Ditton 66s.

Keep our stuff and appreciate it more. I laugh sometimes when someone wants to replace q acoustics 2020i for 3020 and askes the question: how much of an upgrade will this be?.

This rule of keeping your stuff does not apply to me though as i have to buy some atcs and sell the kefs haha

My main amp is the old Brio 2000 I purchased in 2003. Fed by the clam shaped Apollo CDP and driving a pair of RS5's, despite it's lowly 38w pc, it never crosses my mind when listening to music that it's no good and I must get something better. The only problem is that there is no remote - kinda lazy I know but that's the reason I have told my wife why I want a new amp! But it does cross my mind whether spending £1000 is worth it, when a little searching and patience could get me a very good 2nd hand amp and with a remote.

That's exactly my situation, you can't fault the amp, so you really let the music talk. I was curious so went to the audioreview site to see how people rated this amp. It's very well rated but some told it's bright back then in the 90s. I'm pretty sure that by today standards it's rather dark. It's darker then my naim 5si that I had last year. There is good evidence to believe that amp have become brighter over the years since the 90s.

But no remote is not a big concern here, I use stream magic in preamp mode. The only thing I can't do is change source. Not really a problem. If I didn't have the stream magic I'd get a chrome cast audio and stream to the amp with my tablet.
