Record Store Day - only 269 independent record shops still open in the UK (as hghlighted by Blur ). A good excuse (if ever one was needed) to search out some new music...

I'm on countdown. A burgeoning list of purchases in my pocket. And a very early start planned.

Last year, in pursuit of My Morning Jacket's 10inch vinyl EP, released for RSD, I was outside Crash Records in Leeds at 8am. Only one other anorak to keep me company. Crushing disappointment was my reward, as it turned out the MMJ release was an American issue only.

Hope to have more luck this year with various tempting, vinyl releases.

Charlie Jefferson: I was outside Crash Records in Leeds at 8am. Only one other anorak to keep me company.

Never found Crash that great when I used to live in Leeds a long time ago - they did a midnight release of Kid A though, which was a plus.

Is Polar Bear still running there? They were great - especially the one in Headingley - really helpful staff.

For me, almost nothing beats the pleasure of going into a decent well stocked record shop and walking away with a bag full of new CDs/records.
