Iv'e recently purchased a pair of Q acoustics 2020i speakers for my room. My question is what amplifier and cables would be recommended for these speakers? I'm on a budget, i don't want to spend more than £100 on an amplifier or £15 on cables. The room i have them in isn't that big, so i'm not looking for anything professional or high end, just something that will make the speakers sound good, but affordable. I'm new to this , so i'm just looking for something that will get a good sound from the speakers. The music i listen to is house/electronic if thats any help? Dom

Get an old Pioneer A400 amp off ebay .... ask questions before bidding and make sure it works proper... you should pick one up for approx £100 in good conition

get some LC-OFC cables from Maplins or ebay .... Van Den Hul does pretty decent cable for cheap

Er, no. The A400 is vastly overrated and far too old. It's vin ordinaire at vintage prices. http://www.superfi.co.uk/p-10557-pioneer-a10-amplifier.aspx is only £20 more and brand new with a guarantee.

oh well .... I learn new things every day ....

I have never heard an A-10, but I have owned an A400 and have helped setting up systems of my freinds/mates where the amp is/was an A400 .... everyone seems very happy...

if the A10 is much better than an A400, I have learned something new and I will keep my eyes open for one

Well if you've heard it before - you know it sounds good - if not check it out if it's available. For a 100£ ( good working order etc). Seems to be a no brainer for that price. I have one - great working order (bought preowned for much less than 100£ - sounds great as a 2nd system in my daughter's bedroom.

Just to clarify, I wasn't saying the A400 was a bad amp, only that the weird cult status it's achieved make it overly expensive second hand and I was querying the wisdom of buying an old amp on Ebay.

I wouldn't recommend the OP buys a second hand amp from anywhere. I'm a huge advocate of older products but it's a bit of a minefield without prior knowledge and he's joined here in the first place because he self-admittedly doesn't know his arse from his elbow about the subject. Best advice so far is head to Richers and see what they can do for him within his budget.

suppose it's like buying a car

some people would rather buy a brand new budget car for £6k such as a Dacia Sandero or Perodua etc

I on the other hand would rather spend the £6k on a good used car such as a Merc, Lexus or a Jag or BMW etc

Would you rather buy a 24 year old car on ebay for the same price as a new one with a warranty that has almost the same spec?

I don't think that you can compare a Dacia Sandero or a Mazda Midge etc to a good used BMW 840i or a Lexus LS430 that costs the same price

The same applies to HIFi .... (and most things)

I will be ready to buy a new amp in a weeks time for my laptop streaming setup .... My budget is £120 max .... I'm not sure what I will buy but I'm certain that I will find something on the used market that will blow away any new amp that costs £500+

depends what you are trying to compare.

For example, lets take service and costs to get it through it's mot. what about the price of tyres when you need to replace them? etc etc... Horses for courses. What's good for one person ain't necessarily good for the next.

how do you know that for a fact, unless you audition those new amps next to your second hand one?

What about the pioneer sa 610? There's an immaculate condition one that's cheap on eBay . It's old - 1980 , but would this matter?

It's a matter of luck, really. It might be fine, it might not. I wouldn't pay more than the £30 it's on at at the moment.
