Hey,

I've got the upgrade itch. I'm more than happy with CDP, Amp and Speakers. So, that leaves the sub. I have a REL Strata II, that I bought last year, for £180. It's very good, but I haven't heard any others to compare it against. This is strictly for hi-fi use, so speed, tightness and texture of bass are key factors in a replacement.

Let's say the budget is £700 (top whack. If you boys come up with a winner for £400, even better!)

Many thanks.

The sub you have is good and i would definatly stick with the REL's, for your budget i would recommend the R-305, I picked up a REL R-305 in piano black a few months back on e-bay for £280 in absolute mint condition, and these retail at around the £795 mark. so may be worth considering

d_a_n, You're not the first person i've read that rates that sub, so it's definitely going on the list. They are around the £400 mark, right?

Stig, thanks for the tip. I haven't come across that model before, but thats a great price. I think it might be more for home cinema though, as it's a replacement for the 'Q' series, which was for that market. How have you found it with music?

Hi Bretty

I think the ASW610XP version is closer to £700 new, not sure about 2nd hand. I think with that sub though you wouldnt have to look to replace it for a LONG time!

The ASW610 subs are closer to £400 new I think.

I heard the 610XP along side the B&W 685's and the NAD C326 amp and Rega Apollo CDP and it was a superb system; great synergy and the sub really gelled well with the speakers. I was very tempted but I've not really got the room for another sub

Sorry bretty. The XP is £700 IIRC. The regular 610 is £400. The XP has 500w vs the 200w in the regular 610 and a larger cabinet. I think it may have a different driver too. I could be wrong though.

EDIT: d_a_n beat me to it.

For only another £250 (less if you can get to Tottenham Court Rd I'd bet), the wonders of the PV1 could be yours bretty.

seconded. The R series has been recommended to me as a high quality sub for music use by two dealers

Ah, so my thoughts that the 'R' series might be for Home Cinema are off the mark. That's good, especially if they can be picked up for under £300, second-hand.

Thank you for all the suggestions, fellas. Me got some thinking to do!

Hi Bretty

Stick with Rel and a downward firing sub for music.
I find that only Rel and Mj acoustics have a low enough adjustment of their upper frequency setting to work properly in a 2ch setup.

There is a Rel Strata 5 on ebay at the moment for £395. Buy it quick and you'll never look back.

Ive had my Strata 5 about 6 months now and its amazing. It will play a 16hz test tone and is so subtle and quick, it matches perfectly with my ATC's.
I also used it with my PMC DB1i's before i got the 19's.

It has remote control too so setup is easy from the listening seat.
Id be buying that Strata 5 to run with mine as a stereo pair if i had the money.

I'm in agreement with Big Cris re the B&W PV1 sub; stunning sub and will suit a majority of stereo systems plus its gorgeous in gloss black

I know it's not cheap but keep your eyes out for 2nd hand ones; you just never know!

Doesn't look too shabby in white either!...

....just a shame my pic isn't any better.

hi brettty,

I find the R series superb with music, it was recommended to me by my local hi-fi specialist

Nice pic, Stig. The piano gloss is a nice touch.

I spent last night looking at all the suggestions that you boys kindly gave me. If I see one going for the kind of money you paid for yours, Stig, then the R-305 it is.
