Merry xmas everyone,

I'd love to get some recommendations and opinions on some kit I'm intending to buy in the New Year.

I'm looking to connect multiple gaming consoles - including PS3, a freeview PVR and eventually a Sky+HD box into a home theatre system.

I've
already got a HD TV, and am looking for a way to switch between
multiple audio/video inputs and route them to the TV and a new speaker
system.

The recommended 5 star Sony home theatre amps seem like
a good place to start - I guess I just need to put one with a 5.1/7.1
speaker system. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

What is your budget?

At the budget end, you have the likes of the Sony STR-DH800 and Onkyo 507 and Yamaha RX-V465. These are crammed with inputs. If you have any analogue sources e.g. wii or older DVD players etc. using composite and component video I would look at an amp that performs upconversion. This feature starts on models such as the Onkyo 607, Yamaha RX-V565, Denon AVR1610 (5.1), Sony 2400ES etc. Speaker wise, you have numerous choices from small compact speaker systems such as the Jamo HCS5 A102, Kef 1005 and Tannoy SFX amongst others. A good choice that pretty much goes with anything would be the Kef 2005 or Q-Acoustics 1010i (or new 2000 series) packages. I would only go with 7.1 if you have a large room and personally would rather get a better 5.1 system than spend the extra dosh on two extra rear speakers. If full size speakers can be accommodated, have a look at the Monitor Audio Bronze, Focal 700 and B&W 685 setups. You might still find some good deals on the Monitor Audio Silver RS speakers as they've been replaced by the RX series.
