In a previous post I mentioned that my Onkyo 806 receiver is having it's HDMI board upgraded to fix a known issue. This has got me thinking about an upgrade! The 806 is a great receiver so how much would i have to spend to get a noticeable upgrade and what models would you recommend??

Grdunn123,

An upgrade over the 806 would be something like the Sony STR-DA5400ES, Yamaha DSP-Z7, Pioneer SC-LX82, Yamaha RXV-3900, Denon AVR-3310 or Rotel RSX-1550.

An endless list, as you can see. What are you looking for over the 806 in terms of sonic improvements?

I actually love the effortless power the Onk has and was thinking of selling it and moving up to something like the 906......would I gain that much more for what would probably be a large outlay? The other option is to change speaker package - I've been happy with the Mission set up but I feel that the centre and rears could work better.

Grdunn123,

I too enjoy the power of my Onkyo 875. Effortless and muscular.

If I were you, I would keep the 806 and get better speakers. This would bring about a bigger sonic improvement, IMO as oppossed to upgrading to the 906 or the other amps mentioned.

Thanks Ronald, got some Mission floorstanders for fronts.....is it worth keeping these and getting new centre/surrounds or is it better to sell the lot and buy a different package? any recommendations for a room size 4m square? I already have a sub which i'll be keeping.

Grdunn123,

I have never favoured a 'mix and match' of speakers, even if they are from the same brand simply because these were never intended to work together in a cohesive, coherent and seamless manner, unlike a dedicated 5.1 system - the key word again, being dedicated.

I would sell your current speakers and go for something else like the B&W 685 Theatre system. You will then hear what your amp is really capable of!

Obviously, there are also other speaker options - depending on your budget.

Ronald
