Questions around phono stage and my old Amp

Hey guys and gals,

Will I notice a considerable difference in sound quality if I buy a new budget phono stage (NAD PP2/Pro-Ject MM) to use with my old Pioneer A-221 amp whilst waiting to upgrage to the Onkyo 8050? Or will the additional phono stage be even better than the onboard phono stage on the Onkyo? At the moment using an old Toshiba TT but soon to be upgrading to Pro-ject Debut or Rega RP1 (as you can see, very much a budget set up, but it's a start!)

Thanks for any advise as always.

Bump! Anybody? Have the option of buying Pro-Ject Phono Box for 50 quid!

Hi,

My best advice is to save your money. Assume the phono stage in the Onkyo is OK (cannot say as I've never heard it) but my advise would be to start improvements from the source. Good vinyl, then upgrade your cartridge before you even considere a cheap phono stage.

Ok, great. Thanks for the advice. The Pro-Ject (the more likely of the two that I will get) comes with the Ortofon OMB 5E which I'll be looking to keep for a while at least and I'm hoping to hear a considerable improvement on my current set up?!

Thanks again.
