Hi Whathifi team, love the new website and the mag.

Just a idea, but i'd like to see a footnote with a list of equipment used (online and in the mag) when you do a review, ie what dvd/bd player used when testing tv's,etc.

Also, when you review various items do you use them with other products that this item is likely to be used with (as in "now add these") or do you use top of the range kit, ie a budget reciever tested with a top notch bd player and surround speakers.

Sorry, only just seen this.

We list all our reference kit here. We also test with a range of price-comparable kit, as well as rival products, trying out all sorts of combinations to find out exactly what a product is capable of in different set-ups.

Hi Clare - given you place a lot of emphasis on listening to new kit when you review it I was suprised to see cassette type air conditioners in your listening rooms. I have never yet found one of these that did not make a noise, which I would have thought a distraction, when trying to hear the last tiny differences between two rival bits of kit?

We don't use them when we're testing! That's the first thing to get switched off before a test session (all sorts of lighting options, too).

But believe me, air con's very necessary for the rest of the time, especially this time of the year - get a lot of blokes lifting/setting-up heavy plasmas/speaker packages/receivers all day and it can get a tad, erm, earthy....

Thanks for the reply Clare, got some nice kit there, please can i have a rumage in that warehouse!!.

Just a quick question, are you going to change your reference cd player after the wonderful review the Cyrus got?

Alan

Hi Alan,

We're constantly re-evaluating our reference set-ups as new kit comes along, but I doubt we'll change much before the Award-judging season (which in itself involves unfeasible amounts of kit-swapping and interchanges) is through (late September).

However, because of that Awards judging, we are keeping a wide range of outstanding products close to hand for shootouts, reference and longer-term listening/viewing. A lot of work, but a lot of fun, too!
