Hi,

Just read the review of the Sony STR-DG820 in this months WhatHiFi and am probably going to buy one. Also quite interested in the QAcoustics QAV Speaker package that is recommended in the "NOW ADD THESE" section of the review. These are recommended together with a 32" LCD TV. However, I was under the impression that these can only be used with TVs starting from 37".

As this is in a "total system", I assume that they can be used with a 32" TV. Does this mean that they can be used without the stand or can they stand on their own?

Thanks in advance....

I think I'd better answer tis one.

The front left, centre and right speakers of the Q Acoustics 'Q-AV' home cinema package come pre-fitted to a width and depth adjustable bracket and with an adjustable grille assembly. This allows the speakers to be perfectly aligned with the TV, where they 'disappear' because, visually, they simply become part of the TV itself.

You are correct that the bracket adjusts to fit 37" up to 50" screens and so you couldn't 'camouflage' the Q-AV speakers in the normal way, if you are using a 32" TV.

However, they sound so wonderful (I know I'm biased, but they really do

) you might consider mounting the bracket direct to the wall, a little distance above or below the TV, which would still look pretty neat and sound perfect.

Alternatively, our very clever colleagues at Alphason Designs are producing a dedicated piece of AV furniture (in different finishes) which incorporates the Q-AV bracket and means the speaker system can be enjoyed with all televisions -- any size, and not just flatscreens.

Check it out at:

Any idea how much that's gunna retail for? Because although I really liked the Q-AV package I was put off by the cost of the table stand which IMO at £250 is quite dear.

Hi Lewis

I understand the RRP for the furniture will also be £250.

Incidently, because of the extraordinary dispersion characteristics of the 'BMR' drive units in the Q-AV, they are probably the only speakers that can be mounted into furniture like this without any detrimental effect on their sonic performance and soundstage.

That's quite reasonable really for a whole unit. Any idea on when it's going to be available?

Hi Lewis,

I've just managed to track down one of the Alphason guys - he informs me they should be in the shops within three weeks.

Best regards,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Thanks for this. This does look ideal and I am very interested. I don't suppose it is possible to get the dimensions from Alphason? I would also like to know if it is possible to add an additional shelf to the unit shown in the picture (as well as the STR-DG820, I will have my Sky HD box and a dvd player).

If I can fit everything into it and fit it into my room I can order the speakers!

Thanks again,

Dave.

Hi Dave,

Sorry for the delay in replying -- I couldn't obtain ths information until this morning.

The external dimensions of the Alphason 'Sona' HES/50 rack are: H 460mm, W1150mm, D 400mm.

The internal dimensions of the two spaces are: H 165mm, W 475mm, D 400mm.

There's no provision made to allow another shelf to be fitted, but I think the Sky HD box will happily sit on top of your DVD player -- but you'd better check the sizes.

Best regards

Steve

Hi Steve,

Any idea when the product will be up on Alphason's website?

Hi Lewis,

Once again, sorry for the delay in replying. (I was out yesterday, ironically at What Hi-Fi? taking them the new Tivoli 'Networks Global Radio' -- but that's another story)

The bad news is the new Alphason HES50/3 furniture won't be on their website for a couple of weeks.

The good news is (a) they should be available from Alphason dealers from late next week and (b) I've now got the official 'brochure sheet', with the specs etc. which you can view at: http://www.armourhe.co.uk/downloads/q_acoustics/technical/SONA_HES50_3.pdf

Best regards

I think it's really great when someone working within a company takes the time to come and answer questions for people on sites like this so, cheers!
