Hi, ive recently just bought a samsung ps50q97hdx plasma and im chuffed to bits with it. Now im thinking of treating myself to a home cinema setup. Bearing in mind im a complete hifi virgin this might get confusing!!

Ive looked at all in one systems and they just seem cheap and plasticy to be honest. And if it goes wrong you have to throw the whole thing away, so i ve decided to go for a seperates system.

This is the equipment im after,id just like your input as to wether its all going to be up to the job and wether i can squeeze any more quality out of my £900 budget. I really like the look of the q acoustic products and ideally id like to keep it all looking the same. But if theres a better option im all ears.

Onkyo 505 amp/receiver

Q acoustics 1050 floor standers

Q acoustics 1000s sub

Q acoustics 1000ci centre

Q acoustics 1020i bookshelf (rear surround)

Is it possible to just buy the floorstanders and the centre to begin with then add to it as and when funds allow. Or will it just sound awfull without the sub and rear speakers?

This little lot adds up to around £800. so it leaves me £100 for a dvd player that has divx capabilities and also a usb input as i download alot of films and plan to download them on to a memory stick and then just plug and play. Id also like the dvd player to have upscaling aswell.

Can any one reccomend a good player?

Many thanks stewart

First things first.... reconsider choice of amp. The 605 (or newer 606 with extra HDMI inputs) will accept HD audio over HDMI, the 505 won't. I will have a look for speakers.....

there is nothing wrong with buying the speakers in bits as and when you can afford them. At the least I think you want the front L and R and a SUB, then you can run the Onk in stereo mode. Are you trying to get something in the way of HiFi and Home Cinema middle ground? Because it is quite difficult to do. I feel that I have come close with the Monitor Audio BR2s. I don't know how mixing and matching the QAcoustic standard speakers with the newer and improved "i" range. If you are just going to go for the fronts and the sub for the time being, I can recommend the Monitor Audio BR5s and you may not even need the sub depending on the size of your room.

Right im with you on the onkyo 605/606 i can definatly see the benefits there.

Im not really worried about home stereo its purely for home cinema viewing. Would i be better off talking the other half into getting the q acoustics 1050i 5.1 package which is £625 or should i steer clear of the q acoustics and go with monitor audio setup?

oh my room is 5mx5m

I am biased towards the Monitor Audios, I thought they were the best I could get for my money. Don't be too focused on getting floorstanders, because the standmounts tend to be better at the budget you are looking at. Consider the Q 1010i system, the Tannoy F1s and MA BR2AV... take a look at KEF if you want a syle package, but these will not perform as well on the hifi side of things.... but then neither will the 1010i As for the player... dunno... personally I would try and save up and get a better source such as the PS3

This link to another forum on here gives details of Q Acoustics 1010's going for £300 at Superfi

http://whathifi.com/forums/t/11159.aspx

Think they are normally around £500. Also you can upgrade your fronts to 1030 floor standers for just £30 extra.

the 1010s are not the same as the 1010i's. The 1010i's a sonically superior and worth paying extra for, this is why the 1010s are so cheap, old stock

Pioneer DV-600AV for about £120 looks to be your best bet for a quality player for around that money. Definitely looks to be worth the extra £20 considering all the features it packs in.

Cool the dv600av seems to do everything i want it to do and at a reasonable price. Ive pretty much decided to go for the Q acoustics 5.1 package, it seems to be good value for money and suits my needs.

I had a demo of the 1010i's 5.1 package+ Onkyo 606 today at a local hi fi specialist and was very impressed with them. At the end of the day there will always be something better so where do you stop. the setup suits my budget so i will settle for that.

Thanks for your help guys its much appreciated.

One more question though. How do i go about connecting all this lot up. i have the following on order Onkyo 606, Pioneer dv600av and V+ box. can these all be plugged into onkyo via hdmi's and the onto the samsung plasma?

many thanks stewart

Onkyo 606 has 4 HDMI inputs so you be able to do that.
