PS3 future performance

I was wondering, as the PS3 is still quite new, I wonder if we still haven't fully tapped into its potential that its hardware allows so, could it be possible that its blu-ray and DVD playback and upscaling etc... could get even better with future software updates?

It is well-known that the PS3 is difficult to program, as it has required a new approach to software development. Only now are developers really starting to get to grips with it. This will result in better quality software. Whether Sony will feel the need to improve DVD/Blu-ray playback is another matter.

It seems to me that Sony if they wanted could make the PS3 as good as any dvd player at any price bareing in mind the power of cell processor, with the right software

Sony released the latest firmware upgrade for the PS3 (v2.10) just before Christmas. It allows DivX discs to be played, and supports Blu-ray disc profile 1.1.
