is it possible to make the PS3 DVD region free?

AFAIK no it is not possible especially due to the fact that Sony keep updating the firmware so any applied "HACK" would be overwriten buy the new update.

There are places on the web (with a little bit of googleing) where you can find and download "Custom firmware" for the PS3 that does make it region free for both DVD and BD but this modified firmware is only usually applied by people withing to play bootleg software, it also invalidates any warrantry and you can not access the PSN.
