I was of the belief that the PS3 could only play Blu-Ray DVD`s. However, last night I stuck a normal DVD in and it played without problem.

Has the PS3 always been able to play DVD`s or has this come about via a software upgrade?

What do you think of the quality of the PS3 as a normal DVD player and should I adjust anything in the PS3 menu as mine plays with Upscaling switched off?

Thanks

i was under the impression that ps3 was backwards compatible with ps2 and ps2 is dvd .. so im unsure but to me it would appear that ps3 would have always been capable of playing dvd, but then again im a numpty so i could be wrong

Always been able to play DVDs and only the 60gb PS3 is backward compatible with the PS2. Not a bad player for the money but the newer BD players are better with both DVD and BDs.

If you want the games and the wireless funtionality then it's still great value. If not then look elsewhere for the best PQ per pound.

Yup, it's always been able to play DVD's!

As far as the quality goes, I don't think it's that great really, but many other folks on the net think it's the best thing ever! Suck it and see I guess!

The upscaling is worth having a play with, as it may be better than your TV. Switch it to normal and see what you think. If if's not as good as when your TV does the scaling, switch it off again

For DVDs, I find the PS3 was much more hit and miss than the Denon I now use is. With some discs, it looked great. With some that weren't quite as good to begin with though, it didn't look too fantastic.
