I have a baby son who is just starting to walk and unfortunately my floorstanding ATC SCM35s are providing him with much needed support. I wondered if anyone knows of a product out there that I could clip onto the front of my speakers whilst not in use to protect toddlers' hands from damaging the speaker unit itself?

Any help much appreciated!

Not heard of anything available commercially but if you know a carpenter you could give dimensions of the grills and get some solid ones made and even cover in cloth so they look the same

My 752s only cost me £80 off Ebay, so I'm not going to be too upset if my twins destroy them (though we try to make sure they don't do anything silly with them either). Equally, had I paid full price for them, I'd be the same.

For other purposes we'd been given a collapsable playpen, which currently provides a barrier between the sideboard which supports the hifi and the children. We'd originally used it to block off access to the fire and this was very successful. You might need to move your speakers a little when not in use (we don't have to do this for reasons aforementioned), depending on your room layout though. I should mention that you can arrange it so it's not encircled, you can put it across-ways, and so on.

The brand is Lindam - perhaps worth a look on the web?

Speakers are as much a danger to toddlers as toddlers are to them, especially floorstanders.IMO you should disconnect them for some time and replace with small speakers on the wall. Will cost you the same as other options.

How are you meaning?

Meaning toddlers between 12-15 months can easily topple speakers and hurt themselves as they hear sound coming from them, they are always inquisitive to explore.

Ed, I can totally relate. I have a 2 year old AND a 3 year old. My hifi is in a separate room, but when they have access to the speakers, they never touch them. It's just a matter of some repeated and stern warnings. After a few times (like 25 times), of me very sternly discouraging them "no, no, don't touch, NO, NO", LOL, they learned. They never touch them. I think this is the best course of action.

Must admit, this is not my experience, particularly if they grow up around them. The Missions I have are a good sturdy old box which aren't easily shoved over and my kids aren't yet as tall as them (well, my son is, but he's taking after me in the height stakes by the looks of things!), so that works in their favour.

I think some will be better than others; much as I like the Q Acoustics gear, their supporting arrangement makes me think they may not be as good in such surroundings, likewise some of the thinner floorstanders which can rock easily - not thanks to Deep Purple either!

IMO parents should do as they would with anything else child-related and assess the risks accordingly. Needless to say, I won't be splashing large amounts on my speakers in the event the current ones are damaged (hello Ebay!).
