Projector Or tv? Expert comparison,

Unexpert opinion:

- projectors dont produce as good a picture as tv

- projectors are noisy

- projectors need a lot of room

- projectors dont have multiple inputs

tvspecv:I want to know the reasons why tv dominates. (both in dark rooms)

Who Says?

A good Projector can be Breath taking !.... on an 8ft Screen depending on model and Kit.

Nothing as good if you have the right system and room.

heystak:projectors dont produce as good a picture as tv

Depends on the projector and TV in question - projectors certainly capable of trashing a TV pic in terms of quality as well as size

heystak:

- projectors are noisy

-

Again, not the good ones - and certainly not if you keep their fans clean. Sky Box makes more noise...

heystak:

-

Again not necessarily - I enjoy an 80in+ picture from a 12ft throw - and it's cheap & simple to position/hide them well out of way

heystak:

Erm, yes they do - mine has two HDMI inputs and a suite of others, for starters. Not that you need more than one if you've an AV receiver (which, let's face it, it'd be odd for a projector owner not to have) - just a single HDMII cable running from the receiver to projector is all you need.

But I totally understand that projectors aren't for everyone- especially if you don't also have a TV - but they're getting more accessible all the time.

Unexpert response:

- projectors don't produce as good a picture as tv - don't know, but I bet it's as subjective as even comparing good and bad tv's. Good projectors can produce a fantastic picture. I rate my projector (Infocus X9) above any tv i've owned, but maybe i've only had bad tv's!

- projectors are noisy - but not unbearable, I can put up with mine no probs, don't really notice it when actually watching movies.

- projectors need a lot of room - not really, I use mine in a living room roughly 3x4m, picture size 75inch or so diagonal.

- projectors don't have multiple inputs - not an issue as I only have one thing plugged in at a time anyway, but I have one HDMI, and composite which is enough, and some others too. Other people might need 3 or 4 HDMI inputs, in which case this is an issue!

I love having a projector, even if it is only 720p not full HD, I can't stand going round to friends houses to watch films on a small tv's, and would much rather have people round mine instead!!! Wouldn't be without one now! Hope you get your expert comparison soon!

edit: you just got the expert response while I was writing mine!

new tvs and projectors please...

The contrast ratios r always rubbish on projectors aswell dont u agree?

I far from agree! In a dark room with a decent screen and projector, you can achieve better contrasts than any TV.

If i had a 2k limit for tv could i get as good as projector (picture wise) for that money.

I would need a screen that needs to be deducted from the budget.

If i can what projector would it be??

Thanks in advance.

clare loves her projector!!!
but still its a cloudy image, plasmas eat projectors for image quality. fast images r no good either

That is total piffle - I suspect you've encountered a poor LCD projector in a light room.

it was a toshiba 1080i in a dark room

anyway what do you think of this projector panasonic PT-AE3000 is this better then getting the say a V10 coz i dont know of any projector that offers over 100hz motion flow

So we have a stand off!!

Can i get plasma quality pictues from a projector clair for 2k or less?

A lack of experience of projectors leads the average consumer to a TV. For the very best image you need to go to a projector and the high end models outclass even the finest tvs.

At a more modest level the Panasonic you mention has excellent motion - better than many models that are more expensive. Light output is not huge so to get the very best a darkened room is key. Your room does not need to be picth black to be very effective.

Ah, so you're basing your knowledge of projectors on an HD Ready Toshiba? Not exactly experiencing them at their best, then!

You're too hung up on specs rather than reality - 200Hz+ is just a badge. We've seen 50Hz TVs that perform better for motion than 100Hz ones, and 100hz sets that offer smoother motion than 200Hz ones - it's the quality of engineering rather than the size of the number that matters.

Remember, after all, that processing is adding information that isn't there - if it gets it wrong, it's worse than not having it al all!

The Panasonic PTAE3000E projector uses 100Hz Motion Pro engineering for an incredibly smooth picture - i'd wholeheartedly recommend anybody who has the money/room (for it and a decent screen) to consider it for big-screen viewing.

But again, if you're really not sure you want a larger-than-life picture, stick with the (ever-improving) flatscreens - just make sure you get a great demo of both before you make up your mind!

its more of a movie thing for sports live events i dont think it handles as well as a tv.

this projector is around £2000

Another downside is you will have to have longer leads to reach your equipment unless it is kept behind you.

there were av senders on the market to transmit wirelessly but no hd senders.

that was my main issue to not buy 1

If had £2K to spend today, I'd take that Panasonic projector over the Pioneer Kuro 5090.

OK, you'd have a spend a few hundred more on a screen, but a) that screen will last for as long as you need it to and b) the Kuro won't ever show a picture bigger than 50in!

Again, as someone who's enjoyed a great summer of sport so far via a projector, I disagree.

Sadly, most people's opinions of a projector handling sport is formed by the poor--quality examples often used in pubs, rather than actual experience of a decent projector/screen being fed a good source.

is thier hd senders on the market clare? bcoz i only saw some but not in the uk

Following this recent news, i'd expect an array of devices - both integrated and add-on - to start appearing in the UK. We'll keep everyone updated.

thats when i`m gonna get a projector... i saw a black screen (not white) this would be better than white do you agree clare?

tvspecv:thats when i`m gonna get a projector... i saw a black screen (not white) this would be better than white do you agree clare?

I'm assuming you mean a grey rather than white screen (a black one would be pointless!) - again, best to take each screen on merit, depending on how/where you're going to use it.

it was a stand up screen not a roller. ease of use with these they fold down. does the panasonic projector come with a mount or do you have to buy it seperately?

The panasonic projector comes on its own as is the case with most projectors but you can easily get a bracket to secure to the wall or ceiling.

£2000 for the projector £100 for a screen £100 for a bracket

quite expensive compared to a kuro 50 inch and those long hdmi leads
