Problems with Sky+ Sound and Video through Denon AVR1910

I have a new Denon AVR1910 and have had problems losing the Sound through the Denon whenever I used FF, Rewind or the EPG.

After making some changes in Input Assign I have solved this but when I turn the system on for the first time each day I get no sound and have to change the Source on the TV to HDMI. The sound will start to come through the Denon until the next time it is turned off. I then have to switch the TV back to the SCART input (see next paragraph)

I can't get the composite video to come through the Denon and on to the TV via HDMI so SKY+ is connected to the TV with a standard scart lead and the digital audio is connected to the Denon with an Optical Lead.

Having bought this because of it's many and varied inputs and the single HDMI solution I am a little disappointed.

So this begs two questions:

1) why can't I get the composite video to appear throught the HDMI output of the Denon?

and

2) why do I have to change the source on the TV to get sound output from the Denon?

The TV input linking to the audio connection to the Denon has me baffled: since you are (presumably) taking the audio direct from the Sky+ digital output to the receiver, what's happening when the Scart signal gets to the TV should have no effect whatsoever.

Regarding the failure of the Denon to upconvert composite video to its HDMI output, that could be down to what video format you have the Sky box set to output, and how it's connected to the Denon. I assume you're using a Scart adapter to deliver the composite feed, so is the RGB video output set to 'video' (or is it 'normal'?) rather than RGB? And have you tried an S-video connection from the Sky box to one of the Denon's S-video inputs? That should work.

All that said, you're getting the best picture quality by connecting direct via RGB Scart to the TV, rather than using a lesser video format and upconverting in the Denon.

If you have standard Sky or Sky+ your best option is RGB over SCART, so I would forget about using composite video which is the lowest possible quality you can use. It's woeful. Some people have had pleasing results from S-Video but I'm not sure if your receiver has S-Video inputs as a lot of new receivers don't. Did you turn video conversion on? I'm not sure if it is on by default. If you aren't going to upgrade to Sky+HD, I would stick with SCART direct to the TV (set to RGB, 16:9, SCART control on in the picture settings menu) and optical to the amp (set to DOLBY D in the sound settings menu).

Thanks for the very quick replies, I had already read and researched the scart vs composite issue but as I had to change to HDMI to get the sound working I had hoped that it might provide a solution.

There is an S-Video input (also marked iPOD) but I could not get any picture when using this although I did not consider changing settings in the Sky box. I will investigate this again and se if it provides a solution.

It seems that the sound issue is one nobody has come across which would suggest a faulty amp. I have mailed Denon and I will contact the distributor (Richer Sounds) when they open tomorrow.

Thanks again.

Yes you are correct, the audio is connected directly from the optical output of ther Sky+ box to the optical input of the Denon and I have tried two different optical inputs.

The Sky+ Optcal Output is set to Dolby D. Interestingly ( no really annoyingly) it just happened again, I flicked onto the EPG to check the settings and when I returned to the recorded program I was watching the sound from the Denon had stppped. Flicj the TV input to HDMI the screen flickers the sound comes back!

If it has you confused I don't have a hipe in hell!

I have emailed Denon and will phone the distributor tomorrow.

Thanks for the help
