Problem connecting Onkyo NR808 to Kuro500a

I've got a very annoying problem!

I’ve just got a TX- NR808 having had a 705 for several years. I’m having problems connecting it to my Pioneer Kuro 500A, basically I can’t get a picture at all, not even the setup menu, and I get a resolution error displayed on the 808. The 808 displays fine on an old Panasonic 26LXD60 , and my Oppo BD83 and SkyHD work fine when directly
connected to the Kuro. I’ve tried both sub and main hdmi outs and I’ve changed the resolution settings as well. The Kuro is setup the same as it has always been.

Now before I go through the hassle of sending it back and picking something else Yamaha V1067 or Pioneer VSX2020, am I missing something or is there some known HDMI issue between the Kuro and Onkyo?

Not been a fun weekend! I hate HDMI!

Check the instructions on the Onkyo and the Kuro on how to assign and set the hdmi connections. I remember it being a pain when I set up my Onkyo 905 as I had to assign the hdmi outputs and also had to switch on the hdmi inputs on the kuro plasma. It would be nice to have the simplicity of plug and play on hdmi.

I suspect the Onkyo may be outputting a resolution that the screen can't handle.

Don't have an 808 to hand here to check, but on the older Onkyo receivers you can scroll through the set-up menus on the front panel display. I think you can do this on the 808 to.

Press setup on the remote, and the display should show 1. Input/Output assign. Press enter, and you should get 1.Monitor Out.

Check this is set to HDMI: if not, use the up/down keys on the remote until it is.

Press enter again and you should be able to use the up/down arrows on the remote to scroll to resolution, where I suggest you set 720p or 1080i.

This should then get the on-screen display up: if not, go down to 480p or 576i. Once you have a display, you can then experiment from there

The KRP-500a can handle 1080/24p easily.

The bit about having to enable the HDMI inputs is correct though (at least on inputs that have more than one connection option) and not a little annoying when you forget to do it...

the_lefthandedcabbage is as ever correct, and I have edited my post to clarify, but the fact the TV is showing a resolution error rather than just nothing suggests it's getting a signal, just not the right one.

As I said, I don't actually have an 808 to hand to check, and so was just basing my advice on knowledge of Onkyos in general. Thanks for the clarification.

I've done all that ( but I'll have another play. The Kuro can detect the onkyo on an input as HDMI control works ,if I enable it, so I can power off for 808, etc just won't display a picture, grrrrrrrrrr
