Andrew Everard:Just posted a behind the scenes blog piece on how the company responsible for delivering ITV to our homes, and Monsters vs Aliens for Samsung 3D buyers, is gearing up to offer 3D broadcasts over existing TV networks

Andrew,

Maybe it's the pessimist in me, but having just read your blog is this not a case of technology driving the consumer because it can, rather than there being a need (real or perceived) for 3D?

No content and one 3D blue ray disc........................hardly inspirational!!

Tail wagging dog stuff??

whatever about the tail wagging the dog , one thing i cant understand is how the makers of the 3d tvs have not made it their business to have at least a dozen proper 3d blurays ready for this summer ?? and they could have , were talking sony , panasonic here , its like an insult to peoples intelligence expecting them to buy these tvs when theres nothing to watch ?? amazing really...

Somewhat as I have been saying on these forums and in blog pieces for at least a year.

But at least if there is going to be this content gap for those who invest in 3D TVs, it's heartening that the broadcast technology is being put in place to enable it to be filled.

Well, Sony clearly has the wherewithal to make content available, but Panasonic would have to do deals outside its own sphere, having long ago sold its stake in Universal Studios.

given the kind of money invested in this 3d malarkey , i would have thought the tv makers might have sat down together , and agreed to commission the reworking of a dozen suitable movies into 3d , ready for the summer ...

they could give away 3 or 4 with the tvs and high end bluray players , that would be a big selling point , the likes of the dark knight , casino royale , terminator 3 , in a bundle , ok it might not be that easy with those movies , film rights , etc , but they could have done it , they have the clout , but no effort at all was put into readying content

Not strictly true - at CES's 3D TV launches, every main TV manufacturer paraded either a broadcaster and/or a film studio that would be offering 3D before year end. ESPN (in US) and Sky (in UK) will both be up and running by next month, for example...

But I agree that 3D TV content - just like HD and Blu-ray content before it - will be scarce to start with.

But you're missing the point: movies reworked into 3D just won't do, and Sky has taken an admirable stand on this by saying it won't be showing content originated in 2D and reprocessed into 3D.

As I've said before, turning 2D into 3D will give pretty ropey results, akin to that misjudged trend a few years back to 'colorize' classic black and white movies.

Only titles made in 3D, or those entirely based on CGI, which can be reworked completely into a 3D version, are going to make the most of 3D TVs.

But of course that makes the content gap even more of a yawning chasm.

said like borat what ??? , i didnt realise that , i thought that movies could be reworked into 3d as i said , ala sd to hd , this means no existing movie favs (apart from cgi etc) can ever be 3d ? they must be filmed in 3d ? thats a massive negative , it could be a few years before theres decent content around , and were limited to future movies only ...

to be honest even if i have the dough , i wont now be buying a vt20 this year , no point , a v20 will be fine....

Well, they can be, but the results are pretty poor. Rather like upscaling SD content and trying to pass it off as HD, in fact. Or colorizing, which is why that little enterprise failed...

Just didn't want to take credit for the term, when it's been in existence for a good while, leaving a legacy of wrecked classic movies in its wake!

While I find this thread of interest, the whole 3D thing is probably passing me by.

I have been to the cinema to see 3D in action and agreed in parts it does look good, but no where near to the point of making me think about investment in it.

Blu-ray has so much still to offer, and I find myself amazed at some movies as to how good it actually is.

Yes it is good that broadcasters are trying to do their bit, but how many people are actually considering investment in hardware etc, well, at least for a few years anyway. Without content what is the point?

I've seen only Avatar in 3D, and I shall not be looking out for further 3D movies, unless they are good films, irrespective of the 3D element.

Although it is dissapointing that there will be hardly any 3D content to view in the early stages, this will still not put me off buying a 3D TV. As I'm looking to upgrade my old Panny CRT in the coming months, I'm waiting once all the new sets have been released and tested by the good folks at WHFI and whatever set comes out top overall, based on 2D content, will be my choice and if this happens to be a 3D TV to boot then so be it.

Ah, ok. In that case, google did a good job. I'm half Spanish, which is where my "lessons" came from. I will, however, keep google in mind for translation, now that I know it works well, for languages in which I am not the least bit proficient. Where was it when I was learning French and German at school?
