I'm looking for a midrange preamp to go with my Rotel RB980BX power amp. I am currently using a Rotel RSP960AX preamp/processor which in truth sounds very good. It has a full bodied sound with a warm midrange and smooth treble. The bass is also full, but lacks a little in definition. Since the Rotel is not a true preamp, but a preamp/surround sound processor, I was wondering if I would be better served by a dedicated preamp to improve sound quality. Any suggestions?

Have been offered a Rotel RC1070. Would this be a step up from the Rotel RSP960? Has anybody heard this preamp?

I use to own one (960) its a stereophile recommended product. It was a good sounding pre amp, actually better than my 6 yr old budget Rotel pre RC972, the one below the RC1070, I think. The 960 beats the RC 972 soundwise having a more open top end, more detailed and tonally balanced and smoother, the 972 did have a fuller bass though but not as tight. I sold it as now I use a valve pre and have a surround unit as well. The 960 was overall a good stereo pre amp with dolby prologic thrown in. I would think that the 960 would beat most budget pre amps.

Are you referring to the Rotel RC960BX preamp? I have the Rotel RSP960AX which is a sorround sound processor and not a dedicated 2 channel preamp like the RC960BX. I'm sure they quite different.

Sorry i didnt give enough clarification on the model. I had the RSP960AX surround reciever. There are some good reviews on the net that say its a good pre amp even though it has surround sound capacity. Ive heard a few budget S/S pre amps and the RSP960AX competes well sound wise with most of them, and has a warmth in the mids that most dont quite have. I must say I havent heard the RC1070 you mentioned though.
