Perhaps someone else can chime-in, but here in the UK, I'm not aware of any (legal) vendors of commercial music on any kind of flash/memory drive. A notable exception is the Beatles 2009 remasters which are available as FLACs on an 'Apple Corps' USB stick. But other than that, nothing springs to mind. The 'SlotMusic' format which this drive was aimed at never really took off I'm afraid. But there's nothing stopping you from ripping your own CDs to MP3 and putting them on an SD card.

It would be an excellent idea though. A very compact physical media that eliminates CDs (and CD players*) and a boon for those who don't get fast or reliable enough internet to download or stream their music.

*Big CD players could be replaced with simple (and cheap) USB SD card readers with no moving parts.

I agree.

Something that should have happened way back. A CDs worth of memory is peanuts (just not quite as peanuts as a blank CD).

If they started selling albums on non-writable memory cards I would be all over it.

The theory behind it was good, but it had a few major hiccups. The choice of music released on the format was comparatively limited, SD ROM cards were too expensive to manufacture and dupe as a mass-market carrier, there was no qualitative advantage because all you got were MP3s just like downloads (so why not just buy the download), and above all else, the market didn't want another physical medium when clearly even then (in 2008 ) downloads were the future.

Were it to be relaunched, I can see a small niche-market for SD cards carrying 24/96 or 24/192 FLACs or ALACs of selected albums, for those who want the security of buying HD music on a small read-only carrier which you can plug into virtually any computer and play. But beyond that, I don't see a market.

The Astell & Kern music players have micro SD card slots for storing music, although I've not looked into the availability of pre-recorded music yet. Maybe they know something we don't?
