If you suggested the Walkman Pro, you might get a surprising amount of support...

My Sony WM-d6c Pro is still in use almost daily when I travel on the bus/train/tube ... sadly many of my old cassettes are starting to 'stretch' ...

was considering buying a cheap cassete deck to hook up to my hifi and tape some of my newer cd's, but dont think that is a good idea ...

suppose it's time to 'upgrade' to an ipod

Strangely enough I've sold 2 Sony twin cassette decks to different customers in the last week. Its been ages since I sold a cassette deck and then, all of a sudden, as if from nowhere, I sell two TCWE475s!

Although a well recorded track from a 45rpm 12" single (without Dolby on TDK AD-X) on the Walkman Pro would blow an iPod from here to next week for sheer impact.

(Think 'Mirror in the bathroom' by the Beat or 'Boss Drum' by the Shamen)

I used to take in compilations of 12" singles (recorded on a Rega P3 and Goldring 1042) to work on nightshifts when I had the 'Pro' and connect it to a pair of active Wharfedale Diamond Plus speakers. The younger colleagues I worked with just could not believe their ears at how loud and good it sounded compared to the plastic 'boomboxes' they were used to hearing at the time.

I was thinking that, then remembered I've still got my beloved Nakamichi (only a CR1E) in the cupboard and the walkman. Need to plumb the deck in when I finally get my new AV stand. Anyone know if you can still get decent Metal Tapes?

technics sl-1210.

not only in hi-fi but one of the best value products ever, as they are built to last! mine are 10 years old now, and if looked after could work for 100 more. by the time they die the price-per-year, or price-per-use will be lower than any other product by far. even given their age they are the industry standard dj deck, have never needed many changes and never will.

Vandersteen Model 1c - fabulous sound for over 30 years for a silly price of 900 $
Tannoy Mercury F1 - high-end for every 13 year old bought with pocket money (my personal story)
Koss Porta Pro - turned my aiwa discman into audiophile paradise for just 35 euros...

A damn fine hi-fi deck as well. It is a beautifully built piece of kit and I love the sheer musicality of this turntable. Even with a budget cartridge and through a budget phono stage I thoroughly enjoy my vinyl on the Technics.

I swear my ipod puts extra bass onto my mp3s. Yes, I had a Walkman Pro too and it sounded great and yes I used to record my 12 inch singles onto THATS metal tapes, which sounded great. Okay lets remember you got a lot of hiss on tapes but i wonder how the sound compares to an Ipod. The only problem with tapes was the limited number of tracks you could get on each side. You could get long play tapes but they never seemed to last long. Remember the days when you had to fumble around in your car looking for a tape to plug into your car stereo...its probably an offence to do that know...and you always put it in on the wrong side you wanted (unless you had autoreverse of course).

Re: purchasing cheap metal tapes. i seem to recall Poundland used to sell them. Otherwise ebay.

Pound for pound musical fidelity x-series these go on ebay for more than they cost brand new so more for your pound.

for the money........has to be the Technics 1200 deck - 'real' analogue sound, exceptional value for money, bulletproof longevity & now a fantastic range of mods & upgrades available (I got fed up fiddling with rubber drive belts & pulley wheels years ago!) A close second for the sony walkman!

in my limited experience I will say the little wharfedale 9.1 speakers, picked up a pair from superfi for 99 pounds to stick on my little onkyo mini system,

for curiosity I wired them up to my marantz pm7001, and was more than impressed with these budget boxes, sound far more expensive, good bass ,sweet treble and fluid midrange.

malthus80:Marantz cd63mkii ki. Gave high end cd replay to the masses.

I'll second that although I am not sure about being one of the masses! ;o)

The marantz CD63 MKII K1 sig is very good, but has to be very carefully partnered
