i was quite amazed at reading the review of the hdi dune in whf which gave it 2 stars whereas whf had given 5 star review to popcorn hour c 200.is there so much difference in their audio and video quality inspite of using same hardware for media playback .

Do you need a disc drive? Will you be using it for music? If no to the first, get the PCH A-200 - it's brilliant. If you are playing music, get a DAC to go with it.

The Dune is more expensive and not as good. Maybe a three star difference is a lot but...
You can use your receiver's DAC. I have a good stereo amp so need a DAC fir great music playback. The PCH is a great machine though.

TheMovie Juke Box feature of the Popcorn Hour or the Default UI is very poor imho. I previously had a WDTV Live and switched to Popcorn A200 for DTS-HD pass through and honestly hate it for music playback, you cant play a song and then go look for another to play next etc without stopping the song. Perfectly fine if you want to play album but i always like playing the song i want to listen at that moment and it might not be on that album

I found the video produced on the a200 was slightly better than the WDTV Live.

Just thinking though, does the Popcorn Hour use its own DAC when playing FLAC to pass through to a surround amp?

You are wrong my friend. When playing a song, press source and then click ok on the icon that comes up on the screen that looks like a book, you can then press return and scroll through your library. When you want to go back to the playing song, press source and then click ok on the audio icon.

As for the UI, an all singing, all dancing UI will be included in the firmware out this month. Similar to YAMJ but better.

Thanks i'll give that a go, still bit of faff of on though my WDTV just lets me go back. I've just installed the latest update for my a200 and it now pass through DTS-HD without issues.

Is another update due out on top of that?

Neither do I understand 2 star review. Search the web, and you will find reviews where Dune is highly rated. Its main advantages are:

1. Only Dune can play Blu-Ray ISO files with full menus, and play them smoothly;

2. Only Dune can decode or pass both Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio.

Regarding UI, you can add free Zappiti jukebox to enhance your experience;

Regarding sound quality, I think WHF probably referred to analog outs. If you bitstream audio via HDMI to the A/V receiver for decoding, Dune should not affect sound quality at all.

Best rgds,
