I store all my music on a hard drive and all the files are uncompressed in AIFF format. My question is, on good equipment, with good cables, how good is the sound streamed (say using a Sonos BU150) compared to CD quality music when it comes through good quality speakers?

Even on the best equipment Can WI FI produce CD HI FI sound? If not, how far off the mark is it? Lets face it, hard drives are the new music storage devices off the future!!

The wifi is definetely not the limiting factor in a case where you wirelessly stream music off a media server etc.

There is a thread in which people share their experiences with computers and cd players as audio sources...

If I'm not mistaken the bandwidth required to be transferred by an audio interconnect from an audio source to an amplifier is 3Mbps so any wireless connection above that would be enough. Modern wireless lan's work at 10-20Mbps so they wouldn't be a limiting factor to sound quality.

The rip is perfect, as is the file sent across the network.

The Sonos DAC and amp will be the limiting factor.

JohnDuncan:sewage man:How close to HI FI does WI FI come? (lossless files and DAC vs Primare CD player)

Which one?

EDIT - CDP, I mean. Think we know the DAC...

Imo ,which gives me a chance to blast downloads. is that the fun of going to your local record store has gone down the toilet. It was fun to go with your friends and record shop.Coming home with a handful of LPs while eagerly awaiting to get the 12 inches of melted plastics and petrolm. product onto the tt.Then came the cd. Wasn't acceptable at first but definitley has potential. The problem was getting all those cds that you had on vinyl and you still can't get the obscure ones. The computer gained leaps an bounds and record-cd stores closed shop. What once was a great meeting place for social activity has all but gone. Now people are stealing artist's music which they earn there living on and sharing those files with others.Damn you Bill Gates. Now, I know I'm veering of course here. Just a grumpy old man

... now you get the likes of Rhianna out in the market for a billion dollar home just because she can belt out a tune and not even pay her dues.Is this a snub at her? You bet your bottom drawers it is.This artist and every artist with the same atributes and are they really artists? You can steal those downloads-he,he,he

So in imo. there's nothing to understand' I know sewage man used his own music for a new format and I would probably use a music server- naim a or arcam, but it's just to much of hassle. Hopefuly some of you share some of my tirades and I thought this thread gave me the best opportunity. Cheers everyone!

D20. So akin to the CD21 I suppose. By no means the last word at the 800 quid mark, but not a budget player.
