Theres one for sale locally for £20 and was wondering what these are like. My brothers looking for a cheap amp and cdp to go with the B&W 601s2 I gave him, If he doesnt want it I am also tempted to start a cheap as chips stereo for a second room. Want to see what sound I can get for £20 or less a component.

Any opinions greatly recieved!

Not bad, but bump up your price to around £60 or so and check out Pioneer's SA-608 (I think it was, I'll have to check to be honest, might've been 605, anyway...) which I've read has good feedback on some audio forums that do vintage kit. The B&W 601s deserve a slightly better amp I think (no disrespect SA-540 fans!) but you can pick up a lot of decent older bargains on Ebay for around £40-70. Worth checking the Buy-It-Nows on there and filter for your maximum price.

cant go wrong with paying £20 as long as it works properly ... make sure that there is no crackling sound when you turn the volume control or when no music is being played when the amp is switched on

there were low powered ... so you would need to be carefull with what speakers you use

as record spot said, 'up' your budget and get something with a bit more power

He was looking to spend a bit more but I seen this and thought Id ask. May give it a punt myself for a cheap second system then. Will give me something to do as I cant afford to upgrade my main one!

How rude. Thanks for both your replies! Good to hear from the vintage experts!

I have one of these in my spare bedroom ... Pioneer SX 700L ... this is an amp with a built in tuner ...

I paid £15 for mine but came with a pair of vintage AR speakers (which I was more interested in) ... bought off gumtree

works well ... it is 50 watts @ 8 ohms... if you are patient, you will find these or similar for £20-£30 off ebay
