around the same price point are Denon and Onyko.

Onyko amps seem to get a bad press on this forum (even though their amps generally get good reviews in the What Hifi mag), but I have been running a full set of Monitor audio Bronze spks with my Onyko amp for over a year now and I am very happy with the sound it produces.

Pioneer goes well with Tannoys & B & W Speakers, the Yamaha goes well with Dali speakers from experience. Go have a demo is my advice you have to listen to it & like it.

Not tried the Monitors so have no view on them

Regards ..

the monitor audio's for all types of surround mixes whether plain old dts & dolby 5.1 (on dvd's) right up to dolby truehd and dts master 5.1 & 7.1 (from bluray).

This includes film's where there is a lot of action on screen to other films where atmosphere is key.

Pioneer has a more forward and detailed sound, Yamaha is warmer but maybe a better sound field.

The 3050 is a better amp than the LX59 though as it is a couple of levels above it in specs. The LX89 is more equal and it would come down to your personal taste on which one to get. I have an LX83 with Monitor Audio speakers and it sounds good to me, though I never run it loud.

Agree the LX89 is the nearest to the 3050 and the Pioneer being more forward and detailed.

Both myself and a friend of mine has the LX85 with Monitor Audio speakers and they do match well.

The Pioneer may take abit more setting up, but I would never just run the auto EQ on any amp and leave it at that.

I would edge more towards the Yamaha in average/larger rooms, but the Pioneer would be a good option for smaller rooms, although as a few have mentioned, the LX89 is mre of an equivalent.

Audition though, make sure the combination does what you want it to. No harm in trying alternatives too. A Dali Zensor package would be a good alternative.

Four brands, two stables.

Pioneer and Onkyo joined forces a couple of years ago.

Onkyo's bad reputation stems from a spate of their units (616s or 626s I think) actually catching fire about six or seven years ago. Their reliability has improved but their reputation remains forever tarnished. Hence the tie-up with Pioneer methinks.

The Yamaha 3050 is an excellent receiver. I was thinking of getting one myself, but in the end I went for the Marantz 2010, mainly because I could get it on interest free credit at a local electronics chain store.
