Hi All,

Just wondering if you think I should swap my Rotel 1570/1575 for a Pioneer SC-LX90? I love the sound the rotel combo dishes out but i'm starting to get annoyed with the lack of feature, and the new room the amp is in will need eq'ing.

Would you do the swap?

Without a doubt! The LX90 is a fantastic machine and possibly the best all in one around. The Yamaha Z11 was a close contender but the Pioneer when properly set up was the winner in our eyes. With all the talk of 3D the LX90 has slipped from peoples minds but with a dual output 3D Bluray player it makes perfect sense

Nik,

Not interested in 3d so no real loss there, I already have a 9th gen kuro and a LX-91 player so I have always liked the idea of having all pioneer equipment. How would you compare the auto calibration of the lx90 to the newer onkyos etc?

I would wait until the LX85 comes out in september ;)

I have the Pioneer and its a beast of a machine! Features are in excess too and you could not ask for more really. Pioneer is the one to get at the moment. But of course we are waiting on Yahmaha to deliver thier new range too. I know they have been out of it lately, but they may surprise.

I wouldn't quiet go as far as saying that Yamaha has been out of it lately the 1/2/3067 machines sound excellent, but back on topic, I would definitely go for the SC-LX90. I've heard this machine against a number of pre/processor combos and it matches/beats most of them IMO.

+1 SC-LX90 without a shadow of doubt! Awsome AVR that will shine above most for years to come.

The LX90 is vastly superior to the Onkyo for room eq. and is probably one of the best in-built eq's you can get save the Anthem ARC in the top end processor. The Pioneer creates a huge dome of sound with the user at the centre and even with 5.1 delivers gradients in the height of the sound - very impressive stuff.

please explain why - your post sounds like marketing - I've had many Pioneers and whillst I like MCAAC EQ on the Pios - especially its manual elements - I'm not sure how its "vastly" superior to say the very very sophisticated Audyssey XT32 found in the higher up Onkyos ??

the Pios don't EQ the subwoofer for a start

No marketing from me - we fully support Onko and it is a very important brand for my shop but in this instance I strongly believe the SC-LX90 to be a superior machine.

In my experience from setting up both the Pioneer and the Onkyo in our demonstration room as well as many customers house the difference that the EQ make between calibrated and un-calibrated is larger in the Pioneer. The Onkyo adjusts the sound in a good way but the adjustments the Pioneer sets are always more involving. If my client had a difficult or large room I would always start with a Pioneer amplifer unless the price points were close to that of the Anthem products.

Nick,

Thanks for the replies, unfourtunatley I left it to late and the Susano has now been sold. Next one I see at a good price I will be all over it.

Being a Pioneer, Onkyo, and Rotel stockist for over 20 Years, we would strongly suggest auditioning any choice for an extended period, in particular the Pioneer as it has a detailed but forward almost edgy sound compared to Onkyo and Rotel especially.

Our recommendation though would be to give an Anthem MRX receiver a try. We personally believe that for movies AND music Anthems MRX Series is more accurate, musical, and involving sounding.

Also as already mentioned it's ARC calibration software is vastly more comprehensive than either the Pioneers or Onkyos (you only have to consider that the software has to be run on a PC and the fact a half decent mic and stand are supplied to realise that the whole package is vastly more sophisticated).

The only downsides really are that the Anthems won't win any beauty awards!!
