I had a shop around for the latest 5090 set. John Lewis sell it for around £2400 with 5 year manufacturers warranty. Others start at £2100 with a one year warranty but they charge anything up to £500 for a five year one!

My question is if pioneer offer a five year warranty on the product (I believe panasonic, sony etc do too) why should I pay extra? Can't I just register with pioneer or is their warranty conditional on retail price?

None of the manufacturers offer a 5 year warranty on their sets. The retailers choose to offer the extra warranty as part of their service. Some will be Domestic and General warranties whilst others will be retailer backed as the John Lewis ones are. Manufacturer warranty is 12 months. Anything extra is underwritten either by an insurance company or the retailer.

Sorry mate, but recently ,between I think Feb and July,Panasonic offered a 5 yr warranty on specific products guaranteed by themselves. Can happen ,though it is rare.

Yeap. The manufacturers do sometimes offer the warranty as part of a deal to sell more sets. But pioneer, for instance, do not routinely provide a 5 year warranty.

I have to say, for the amount of money the Kuro costs, you have to have the 5 yr warranty. That's why I bought mine from JL...although I was able to broker a deal via price matching to get a really good price.

Thanks guys. I think I might do the same. I'm not sure if its wise to buy a plasma at that price with one years warranty. Perhaps household insurance would do the same. I have to check that out.

I think this is a good deal, i maybe wrong though if you have seen it cheaper:

Pioneer PDP-LX5090UT includes stand and undermount speakers and FREE 5-year warranty - £2,449.95

My local indie tell me this is still going, at least for October. They best be right, as I'll be getting quite prickly with them if i buy one and it turns out to be untrue.
