Pic in signature line

A couple people have asked me how I added pictures to my sig line, so rather than continuing to hi-jack Big Air's thread I started this one.

I got the idea from idc who did it first. First you have to post the pics to a picture hosting site. I use photo bucket. Then you just put the image html into your signature. But, you can only have 256 characters in your sig line, so make sure the image name is short. I also put all 3 images into one jpg otherwise I would never have been able to post 3 pics and stay below 256 characters. Here's an example (but you need < > around this): IMG SRC="http://i714.photobucket.com/albums/youralbum/hifi.jpg" width="360"

I was also asked how I was able to make 1 jpg out of 3. For that I used the paintbrush program that comes with Windows.

1. Open up all 3 jpgs each in it's own paintbrush app.

2. Shrink down the images to a managable size. Use the "stretch/skew" function on the image menu. I shrunk them horizontally and vertically to 20% of the original. Do this to all 3.

3. Using "attibutes" option on the image menu, change the width of the 1st image to 3 times it's current size, plus a little for white space.

4. Now do a "select all" and copy the other two images into the 1st image leaving a small amount of white space between them.

5. Save the image back to disk as a jpg. Now you're ready to upload the single jpg to a picture hosting site.

BTW, if you add an image to your sig, I'd recommend picking a reasonable size (controlled by the width value in the html) so it's not too distracting. You can change the width setting to anything you like and it will auto pick the appropriate scaled height value since it's not specified.

It's funny, this is really very simple stuff but anytime you try and explain anything techie it sounds horribly complicated....

Andrew Everard:Oh good, everyone having pictures in their signature should slow down page-loading nicely...

LOL. Actually, as long as people keep the sizes small I doubt those little pics will make a diff.

JohnDuncan:I just think it looks a bit bleugh (especially on Stuff, where everybody does it),

Hmmmm, well, I think it would be kind of nice if people had some pics of their kit. It's fun to see....

JohnDuncan:...but am not gonna veto from a tachical point of view just yet...

Well, you could always confine it to just me and idc. We should be grandfathered in.

Nice useful post Jaxwired.

I might do it for my sig which needs updating after I sold my DacMagic (*sniff*) and the whole system is about to change completely.

I just did it as an experiment, I didnt expect it to work. But I have always liked to brighten up the forum posting pictures. I dont do it so often now as I have become (been made) aware of copyright issues

.

Mine were by using the smallest sized photo on Flickr, designed for use as avatars. I just copied and pasted the URL into the signature part of my account and then without spaces put [ img ] and then [ / img ] on either side of the URL. Et voila!

Can I get an award or a prize or something nice for coming up with the idea?

a bit off subject, but how do you get an avatar?

tried twice a few weeks ago ... says it takes 10 min but did not work, so obviously I am doing something wrong?

It's all based on post frequency. You're just not posting enough...

Email your chosen photo (which I think needs to be 100 by 100 pixels or something max) to the contact us email for What Hifi and The Moderator arranges for a pixie to do it for you.

thanks IDC ... think the pic size was way too big ... will try again when I have time

Not only that but we'll only get about 3 replies per page! Nice idea, in theory.

Edit: Note to self, must make my signature line smaller.

If everyone starts to do it, it will have become cliche and passe and I will stop and do something else.

In any case, signatures are limited (unless you are Jase) so whats the problem?

vinod_david:We need to thank our team from WHFSV and Mr E especially for not tightening the signature line permissions as other forums do.

🙂

Ooo now I hadn't thought of that...

idc:
one off:cant understand why people do it to begin with

I don't understand you, but you do me no harm.

well im glad about that but i havent a clue what your talking about

i dont think signatures do harm if thats what you mean

There are couple of forums I know which has only the BBcodes turned 'ON', and HTML, IMG, etc., are just turned 'OFF'.

My humble suggestion to the team and Mr E is, please allow 'font', 'text size' and 'colour' to be included in the signature line permissions. The HTML, IMG, etc., can be taken off.

🙂
