phono stage? making it too complicated?

Damn it, my initial post didn't show up.

Here I go again....

I got a cheap but decent turntable (audio technica at lp 60) which has an exteremely short (not detachable) RCA out. To take it to the phono input of my amp, I have to place it right on top of the amp which is not an option. Now I can get RCA extenesions (pluges with female on both sides; so 2 of those and a new RCA chord) or I can get a phono stage (that is the more expensive option). Now will RCA extension take something away from the music? is there any other option?

I've used phono extension leads before and not noticed any difference in sound.
