Is there is a better match to the characteristics of the B&W606s2 than the Cambridge CXA81 in the $1500 range?
Looking at the Cambridge photo pre-amp , is there another brand, rega fono mini for instance?

First question the answer is yes.
How much are you planning to spend on the phono preamp? It might be better, as I have already mentioned, to buy an integrated amp with a phono stage built in.

Thought the DAC w/AB toroidal power was better than the D or G type amphlipher. Also thought the separate phono preamp was superior to built in. Know nothing about them but seems a mid price point is around $300.

I would have a look at the Project phono stages.

only because I have recently bought one and like it.
