I have a Garrard SP.25 Mkll turntable which I shall be using in conjunction with a NAD 326BEE amplifier and B&W 684 loudspeakers. Which phono amp will be suitable for the turntable? Also which cartridge will be appropriate for the turntable ? Is it worthwhile investing to that extent in a turntable of that vintage? The turntable has some sentimental value for me. Or will the wise thing be to replace the turntable with something new, in which case what price is the Garrard likely to fetch if I sell it?

Hi Eugene, welcome to the forum.

A venerable turntable you have there, used to own one myself.

Personally I think that this would be a very weak link in your system and, depending on your budget, you would probably be better off replacing it.

Depending on condition I would hazard a guess and say value is around £20-40.

Unless you really must keep the NAD I would tend to look for an amp with a built in phono stage too.

What would be your budget for phono stage if you were to keep the NAD?

Thank you. I was thinking a budget of about £170 for the phono amp. I currently have a Pro-ject Phono Box MM on the turntable but was advised to upgrade the phono amp when I complained that I do not hear much of a difference between vinyls on the turntable and cd's playing on my NAD 515BEE cd player. I bought some cd's of the same albums I have on vinyl for comparison.

The thought of replacing the NAD amplifier has not occurred to me. I must admit I'd find the idea of replacing the turntable more appealing, but I have very little knowledge of these things.

Fine though ifor's recommendation is I don't think it would be worth introducing into your system without first updating the turntable, but feel free to give it a go.

You might well be right, I don't know the TT.

The turntable, whilst no doubt usable, is a wee bit archaic and if it still has original cartridge then will not be outputting what it was once believed to be capable of. This is why I suggested sorting the source first and then consider improving on the Pro-ject phono box. Hope that makes sense. 🙂
