Oh dear! The original post did have text but the s**t software of this forum lost it. £1m listening room we are told. £50 forum software though.

I said in my lost post how good the recording was and what I delight it was to listen to this old CD. To skip a genre I then played Karajan playing Prokofiev's 5th Symphony, a recording which in its original CD version was nearly unlistenable to but now remastered is perhaps the definitive version of this great piece of music.

Sounds pretty pointless to me, maybe that is why their reviews differ from other uses reviews. I would have thought that a more normal living room would have been better as that is what most people will be using.

Chris,

Just wondered wher you got that piece from, Karajan playing Prokofiev's 5th Symphony, that is.

Sorry only just seen this. Amazon have it:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Prokofiev-Symphonies-no-1-5/dp/B000001GHI/ref=sr_1_5?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1363012215&sr=1-5

As you will see from the reviews the1st with which it is coupled isn't so highly rated and indeed some people don't like the 5th but they are wrong lol. The Penguin Guide says of this 5th "Karajan's 1969 recording of the Fifth is in a class of its own." and I think that is right. It's an interested recording because when it first came out on CD, having previously been on vinyl, it nearly put a lot of people off CDs because it was simply awful. It was so shrill that listening to it was like hearing someone scraping a fingernail down a blackboard. Anyway now remastered it is wonderful.

Who's living room? Yours? mine? None of our rooms will sound the same, nobody has a "standard" living room, so how are you supposed to pick one that's representative? You can't, so you create a room that adds nothing (or as little as possible) to sound of the equipment and then you review the equipment, not the room. You haven't really thought it through have you?

This is why reviews are only a guide, you have to do your own listening, ideally in your own room, to make a choice.

Well it is '68 in the Gramophone and Amazon review or are you referring to the release date? "Karajan's 1968 Prokofiev Fifth is a great performance."

Many thanks. Apologise for my shockingly bad English Grammar in my last post.

You might be right! The Penguin Guide has it as 1969 but that might be when it was released, which would make sense for a late 1968 recording. Whichever it is it is a great performance.

Thanks for that, one that escaped my collection, may well add it. And I agree about the forum part also.

That is a fair point BUT I still think it is misleading and when they say things like positioning is not fussy they mean in their specially treated room that presumably has bass traps and sound panels so there are few reflections. They may not get bass boom when speakers are 1 foot away from a wall but does not follow you won't, so maybe they should be guarded with some of there comments. Not everyone can home demo gear before buying.

LHC is being his usual pedantic self. Of course everyone's living rooms are different, but it is possible to make certain reasonable generalisations which would be largely representative for the purpose of testing, and none of them would involve having a £1m carefully-designed and acoustically-treated room.

<Removed by MODS> Are you seriously suggesting WHF should do their test in their front room? Can you imagine the ridicule that would be heaped upon them if they did that?

 What a lovely mature response. I suppose we should expect nothing less.

Actually LHC I've thought for ages you have issues you need professional help with. Maybe now is a good time.

This is spot on ....

Hear a system in a room like theirs and you will hear how much effect your room has on it
