Why does my brand spanking new Panasonic TX32LXD85 have strange white dots and lines on the screen when I'm using a DVD player. I've tried 3 different players and several discs and it's the same on each one. This is my third attempt with Panasonic - the previous two went back for different reasons but all three displayed these "marks".

There's an "overscan" function on the TV which essentially zooms in about an inch all round the screen but you lose definition - I think it's unnaceptable.

Any suggestions?

What DVD player are you using, how is it connected and what signal are you sending the tv (576p/1080p etc)?

I've used 2 different Toshibas and a Sony DVD player. Connected with a scart to the AV2 channel.

Don't know about what resolution it's sending to be honest.

My Sky SD box is also connected with a scart to AV1 and doesn't show any of the marks.

The 'Overscan' setting in the 'Setup' menu should be set to 'On' when watching standard definition sources. As you have experienced, when it is off, you will see various lines and dots around the edge of the screen but this is normal. All modern tv's automatically overscan the picture so that you don't see this 'noise'

As to the picture losing definition when overscan is on, that sounds rather odd as I've messed about with these tv's no end and have never seen a drop in picture quality solely by switching overscan from off to on.

Not necessarily, it could actually make things worse. In simple terms, the only time you would switch overscan off is when you are watching a true 1080 source. Any other source has to be upscaled/downscaled at some point in the chain anyway, so switching overscan on simply means the picture is scaled slightly differently. There should be no further loss of picture quality when using this feature and I can honestly say I've never seen a difference myself with the LXD85.
