I have the Yamaha 863SE amp and all my kit obviously runs through it.

My question is how can I stop my Panasonic DVD player (DMR EX75) reverting back to 576p setting on the video output. As every time I play a DVD I have to go the the playback menu, then go to connections, then Alter it to the 1080i native resolution of my TV.

Is there any way I could maybe use my amp to permantly keep all inputs upscaled to 1080i? (with the exception of sky hd as it's already set to 1080i output) If so, how? Anyone with the same amp may be able to advise.

Thanks

If it's 720p why do all images look much clearer when set to 1080i ? Are you sure its 720p?

Thanks

Hi,

I'm not familiar with your DVD player, but assuming it's connected via HDMI and not component, this could be an EDID (Enhanced Display Identification Data) bug. Devices connected via HDMI share EDID information to determine the available input / output timings (resolution and frame rate). It could be that one device is telling the other that it can only send / receive 576p. A firmware update of one or all devices in the chain could cure this. I'd start by looking at the amp. Try removing it from the chain and see if that helps.ÿ

I'm pretty sure your amp can only scale analogue video. Digital video sent over HDMI (at any resolution) is passed straight through to the TV. You could try connecting the DVD player via component and let the amp do the scaling.

Odds are your TV has a native vertical resolution of 768 lines. To get the best picture (the one that most accurately reproduces the original film / digital master), you want to do as little processing as possible, in as few steps as possible. Scaling up all the way to 1080i and then back down to 768 lines is a bad idea. The extra detail you perceive with 1080i is mostly artificial. It's not present on the disc. You'd get a more accurate picture by scaling to 720p in the DVD player or amp and feeding that to your TV. Or if your TV's processing is better than the DVD player's processing, output 576i/p (preferable 576i) to the TV and let it handle all of the processing.ÿ
