I'm thinking about buying a blu ray player. I don't have a 3D TV so don't need that facility. For blu ray which is better, the panasonic DMP BD85 or Sony 570S? Any other suggestions under £300?

thanks

Adam Cox,

Considering the fact that the Panasonic DMP-BD85 was beaten by the Sony BDP-S370, and you have no interest in 3D, why go for the S570?

Ronald

I have been more than satisfied with my BDP-370 and I've actually used the iPlayer and Channel 5 catch-up quite a lot. It's very simple and the PQ is surprisingly good, especially BBC HD. IMO the blu-ray performance of most players is similar, so price and the online facility make this Sony a great buy.

Of course, Adam might be needing the built in wifi the S570 has over the S370???

He asked specifically about blu-ray quality between the BD-85 & S370.

If he wanted built-in wifi and had no interest in 3D, then I would suggest he consider the Sony BDP-S760 instead which is available for £99.00 at play.com

Ronald, although the sony won the super test I think you would find that if the WHF team had a choice of the sony or the pana bd85 I think you will find that they would choice the bd85.
Correct me if I am wrong WHF TEAM.

Simoncar,

I believe what the review team at WHF 'think' is clearly translated in the verdict of the Group Test, which the Sony BDP-S370 won.

The Sony also has so much more to offer in terms of functionality besides the best picture and sound quality in the test.

I am a big fan of Panasonic blu-ray players, having owned the BD35, BD55 and BD80 but the Sony really is something else.

Ronald

If you can get the Panasonic for a good price then i would consider buying it. The Sony is a great performer but the build quality is very low budget!

No mention of the word 'quality' in the original question, I'm afraid Ronald. He asked which is best for bluray, and the online part of blu ray disc content could be important to Adam????

I believe the Sony S570 would be a better machine than the S760, from last year, for blu ray use....

Cheers....

bigboss:As far as I can remember, the Sony S370 was favoured because of the price. WHF did not find the Panasonic BD85 to be inferior than the Sony. Thanks Big Boss, that what I WAS trying to say to Ronald, but like i said i am sure the WHF team would pick the pana over the sony for picture and sound quality.

The Sony was judged to be a worthy winner because it produced the sharpest, cleanest and most detailed image of all the players in the Supertest pack.

Not only that, it was also the most capable machine with music.

What made it further stand out in this pack was it's sub-£200 price tag, hence it being a clear winner.

I agree! I wished it looked more like the BDP-S760 instead.

just had the same decision to make, after reading lots of reviews went for the panny 85,went for it because of the superior mch audio, arriving today will report back on performance, also you can claim 6 blu rays by redemption.

i have a panny 85 and am really happy with it pic quality is amazing and what surprised me is not the step up in pic quality but the step up in audio quality, and im only listening in 2 channel not hd audio format!

No-one seems to be considering the Samsung players much on the forum.

The 6900 now at about £200 seems to hit all the right buttons with iPlayer and Lovefilm on the way, other apps, file play from network and USB, (including NTFS for files > 4Gb), very fast loading times, and is well rated for picture and sound quality in several reviews. I saw it myself and in terms of picture from a brief demo it would be hard to fault.

It looks like Samsung are now bringing out the 7900 which is essential the 6900 with 2 HDMIs like the Panasonics.

I also had my mate's Samsung 3600 on my projector, and set to 24fps it was a smooth and degailed watch, colours looked fine, and with the HD audio bitstreamed gave a definite improvement over standard DD / DTS, especially the width of the soundstage. The upscaling was maybe very lsightly softer than my XDE 500, but was absolutely fine even on a challenging DVD like Stargate.

So many conflicting views and reviews so it's hard to know if BluRay players do change in quality much when used over HDMI, but for me the Samsung is worth paying a bit more for the NTFS and fast loading. Tried to get one on Sunday but they were all sold out.

I thanks for all the feedback. must admit I don't think there is a clear cut 'right' decision to make. I think the positives from this are that if you stick with the major brands like Panasonic, Samsung and Sony, you aren't going to go too wrong!
