Hi All

Bit new to this so hope someone can help out. I have a Panasonic DMP-BD85 Blu-ray player and want to send the audio via optical to a Benchmark DAC. The problem I get is the DAC errors with a "Non PCM" message. I have set the HDMI setting to "off" on the BD85 but still get the error. Has anyone got some experience of this.

Thanks in advance

There should be an option on the player to set the output to PCM...

Are you using CDs or DVDs/BDs? If it's the latter, the problem might be the DAC can't decode Dolby Digital or DTS.

zekezebra:I'm using Blu-ray DVD's. Could this be the problem?

Yes. I doubt the Benchmark can decode the soundtrack on the disc. Try changing the settings so that the BD player outputs in stereo and the Benchmark might be able to work with that.

I can't find the manual for this player but somewhere in the audio settings there should be an option to output 2-channel PCM via the optical output. Obviously AV receivers can decode all kinds of other encodings for surround sound etc. but you're Benchmark won't have a clue about this. If you have the manual to hand then that might be a good place to start, if not a quick scan through the menus should do it.

Pages 29 and 35/36 of the operating instructions. (Select the 5MB English 16th Feb 2010 one.)

(Hopefully you had some in the box too.)

If you have trouble accessing it (I did once) here are the relevant settings under the 'receiver via coaxial or optical' column....

Remember in this case (96khz is supported on your Benchmark), to keep 'PCM down conversion' switched to 'off' as in the table (see note 4 above.)

Hey Chebby

That worked massive thanks, man it's not that straight forward though. Really happy with the quality of the picture / sound but not that impressed with the time it take to actually take to get a DVD going. Also moving aroung the set up is really slow.

One more question, if I may, is there any way to set the audio level as it is much quiter compared to the Squeezebox connected to the same DAC.
