Good evening

I have a pair of focal 908 speakers in mahogany that I would like to colour black, just wondering if anyone has ever successfully painted/stained speakers and what they used?

If you are not bothered about keeping the grain of the wood then the plasti-kote spray paints give very good results. I have a speaker project on the go and I will be using the plasti-kote gloss black spray.

A minimum of sanding and wood dye would give a black ash effect - I did so on veneered Chipboard a long while back. A gloss piano finish is a very different story. Depends if you wish to strip the units and work hard or just blacken.

I'd be minded to sell the speakers and buy a black pair.

You'll lose something on the transaction, but you'll own a pair of speakers that you can sell on, whereas a self-painted speaker is pretty much worthless.

Prep is everything..once prepped..think of coach painting..thin coats layering, as coats build up gradually make them thicker! Denib between coats and hoover cabinets before next coat..after painting..wait two days then varnish paint..use screwfix floor varnish..satin clear (waterbased) again denib between coats..four coats of varnish..use decent brush..after all this it will look lovely!

I did a similar job on an old sideboard that I sanded, then used a black stain, then black wood polish. Unless you look closely, because of the underlying wood colour/original stain - it looks like a dark black ash but in fact is browney/black. Any visitors think it is a new piece of furniture, so if you take your time you can get quite smart results. It also depends on what colour or finish you want or if you are trying to match to other furniture. I was quoted about £300 by a specialist wood polisher/sprayer to sand and spray paint the sideboard. Most of the cost was the labour to sand and prepare them.

The 908s have a grey front baffle and grey top, Black bottom, it's just the sides and back that are mahogany

Take them into a cabinet maker. I repainted my old Wharfedales and the prep and masking up took ages. If you have the patience it'll be a good and satisfying job. Personally though, I'd let a professional do all the donkey work.

Ive contemplated doing just this if I decide I need to make my monitors more living room friendly.
