Hello everyone!

I have a client that wants me to design a space for an outdoor home theater in his backyard. The house is in a place with a bit of snow during winter time, the rest of the year is quite mild. I want to know what kind of equipment should be good for this kind of thing, what should I have care with, given the weather.

I don't have a budget yet.

1. I was thinking of proposing a SONY VPL-HW45ES in an enclosed support, but don't know if 1800lumen is enough for outdoor use on sundown or before complete night or even in full moon lighting. Also, could there be any problem with the cold or frost? Can you recomend another projector, preferably cheaper too as an alternative?

2. I think we should use a retractable screen, preferably motorized. What do you recomend? And maybe for a screen over 120'', what's the throw distance I should have for the projector?

3. What sound system should I use? Can I use standard outdoor speakers like B&W? Is there any kind of subwoofer for outdoor use or can I place it inside the projector enclosure?

4. How much can I tilt the projector? I don't understand what % means, but I have a perfect spot at ~75º without needing an enclosure.

Thank you all for your help!

on what you will need to setup a outdoor home cinema, just a quick google comes up with this, one of many guides.

just one question, will this outdoor cinema be used all year round or just in the summer months

75 degrees, or rather 15 degrees to the horizontal, which is what I think you mean, is about a 25% slope or 1 in 4 in old money. 75 degrees to the horizontal is like putting the PJ in the front row of the cinema!

Basically, the opposite (vertical change) divided by adjacent (horizontal distance) gives you the tan of the angle. Multiply that by 100% and that gives you the slope in percentage terms. Unless I've got it wrong, of coursem and you're supposed to use the sin (opposite divided by hypotenuse - that's the slopey bit),

Oh. My advice about outdoor cinemas in the UK - DON'T. Either it's going to p*ss down with rain all the time, or be foggy, or both, not to mention freezing cold, or someone will take off with all your equipment one night. And unless you happen to live in the middle of nowhere you'll annoy your neighbours too, To the point where THEY are the ones who take off with your gear.....
