Avatar is going to win everything all people do is rave about it. What's the saying "a clean sweep", I think that's right.

If you know anything about south african history, you would know why district 9 was so good.

I found it a really good movie TBH, and I will vote for that, and hurt locker .

Don't agree with you on that one, John707. A different take on the sci-fi genre, and all done on a relatively small budget with unknown actors, to great effect IMHO.

Andy - you forget that in Hollywood it's all about the money! unknowns and small budgets don't get the big prize!

Actually it's not quite so sinister as that. Big films do often tip the scales in the voting but this tends to be because the larger a film the more people work on it. Voting is strictly limited to the members of the academy and not the general public. Therefore with a finite number of voters and a particularly large film that has employed a significant number of the voters you can see how that can influence. It isn't, however, uncommon for a small budget film that captures the imagination of the academy to steal the show from time to time. Just look at Slumdog Millionaire last year. Perhaps not the smallest of budgets, but probably didn't employ very many members of the academy. Crash in 2006 wasn't a hugemungous film, but it was good. Likewise American Beauty and Shakespeare in Love in 2000 and 1999 respectively. I wouldn't say either of them had a particularly large budget.

Couldn't agree with you more. Every time that man is on screen in IB his presence makes the room drop a few degrees.

i think ib is one of those rare movies , that i could watch once a month , and enjoy it everytime , right from the start i knew it was going to be brilliant , no silly effects , car chases , etc etc , just brilliant acting all round , tension , suspense ,dark humour , all the main players were perfectly cast , even pitt ..

the music too was brilliant , typical tarantino style , for me , a work of art , one of my all time favs .....

I completely agree with both of you. A terrific performance from Mr Waltz and, I think, a worthy Oscar winner if indeed he gets the award.

Regarding the OP, I've only seen Avatar, Inglourious Basterds and In the Air from the Best Picture category, so can't really comment. From what I have seen though, IB would be my preferred choice from the trio as I thought it was a great film. Up to the standard of QT's best.

I wonder whether Mr T's head will get any larger if IB wins and he gets best director.

HTMB,

Agree with you, I got IB on Blu-ray in December and have already watched it 4 times. I think it's going to be one of those films in my collection that finds it quite difficult to work up a coat of dust.

I like a lot of Tarantino films, and a few of them are defo in my top 10 favourite films, but IB just might be the best yet.

gel:Avatar is going to win everything all people do is rave about it. What's the saying "a clean sweep", I think that's right.I am not so sure. How can a film with a terrible screenplay and poor acting be best picture? You say that everyone raves about it, but that does not include film critics. It will probably pick up the technical Oscars.

agree totally. Avatar is breathtaking because it's so unlike anything that's gone before (other than Dances With Wolves, Delgo and Call me Joe, of course), but it's certainly not a great film. Like the first Transformers movie, it's enjoyable and trashy fun rather than anything approaching brilliance. I reckon Jim Cameron may sneak best director as a nod to the sheer groundbreaking style of the film, where he had to contend with issues not seen since, well, ... Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

You have to admit Andy, opinion will be divided on District 9. I get the film and what they were trying to achieve, I just thought it could have been better, I was a little disappointed.
